    Historical fiction, complete with bishounen!
Though not to be taken as a lesson in history by itself, this series is based on actual people and events, which can be confusing. Pay close attention to the following details and the historical context of this entire series will make sense to you:

The opening of this season finds the main characters in March of 1863, toward the end of the time in Japanese history known as the Tokugawa period, ...

  • If Only This Is How We Were Taught History!
This is such a solid series and a great prequel to the main two seasons. I'm sort of sad that I had to watch this out of order because it provides a lot of background to the main characters in the following seasons. As always, the music is fantastic and the visuals are mind-blowing. The plot is very solid. Unfortunately, the main character sees only a little development late into the series ...

  • Loved it as much as the 1st season
So happy to have more background on all of the characters after the first season. I loved the end of this season as well. I ended up watching season 2 after the 3rd season and it all made perfect sense. I've watched this series twice now and own several of the video games. Its great. Love Saito and Souji. <3

Reimeiroku: Just Okay; But Provided Some Insight
I just watched the first and second seasons of Hakuōki before watching the prequel. My intent was to watch them in the order of their original release as follows: Hakuōki (1st Season is Available on Crunchyroll), Hakuōki Hekketsu-roku (sequel), and Hakuōki Reimeiroku (prequel).

First of all, the plot is contiguous there are no holes so it was executed nicely unlike some other series. The main ...

That was Amazing...There Are So Many Anime series In which we finish and always say and hope for a Second Season Even though we know there won't be one. But the Way It Ended really seemed as if it Will Be Continued. So Until Then...

Actually Never Mind about that, ^^^ I didn't know about the 2 seasons of Hakuoki.

    They need more episodes!
This is a great show! I wish they had more episodes with just the shinsengumi guys before hakuouki shinsengumi kitan started. I hope they can make the games in English sub so I can actually play them!

Enjoyable but seems to just end.
I understand that this is a prequel to an ongoing show, in and of itself the anime was good, but the ending made me feel like the show was canceled half way through the season. I believe that if you had seen the original anime you may have gotten more out of this. The characters had good depth and the story line kept you guessing on who were really villains and who were simple doing what needed to ...

    The Birth of the Shinsengumi!!!!
With Hakuoki Reimeiroku, there's two ways to go about it:

    1) Watch it and then watch the first and second seasons of Hakuoki.
    2) Watch the first and second season of Hakuoki, then this anime.

Either way is fine, it might just be though that unless you're really familiar with Japanese history in the time period this takes place in (mid to late 1800's I believe) then you might be a bit ...

    A worthy prequel to Hakuouki
Quite a good addition to the Hakuouki series. Instead of Chiruzu being I guess the "human" reasoning side to the samurai, there is Ryonosuke Ibuki. I enjoyed his character. I liked seeing Toshizo before he became such an unfeeling harda$$. Apparently, Sananan-san was always creepy. Admittedly, I was surprised to find my favorite character, Soji, was crazy and enjoyed killing a tad bit too ...
