Good, but not great...

I'm not gonna go over the entire show in depth, over explain stuff that is easily learned by watching it. You want to know one thing, "Is this seriously worth my time?"

Probably.

You will noticed a trend with this anime: people ranting about how incompetent, annoying, and utterly useless the main protagonist is. And she really is.

She has a short sword, and supposedly knows how to use it. Yet, doesn't. She does nothing. At all.

Oh, she's a devil. Yeah, I know this anime is loosely based on historical events, I think that they really stretched it with the devil characters though. (hahaha)

But seriously, the devil stuff is pretty cool, only problem is, SHE DOESN'T DO ANYTHING "COOL".

Imagine watching Bleach... and say, Ichigo, the main focal point of the show, DID NOTHING.

Okay, so yeah, cool stuff is happening, but it''d be so annoying to watch him stand there twiddling his thumbs, behind everyone.

Oh, and he knows how to fight, and has a sword, and even has special powers. Yet, does nothing the entire time.

Pretty annoying?

That's this show, basically.

I gave it three stars because the other dudes in the show make it a decent watch. You get to see some cool sword fights, beautiful art, and honestly, if you can block her out and pretend she isn't there, it could be a 5 star show.

Hakuoki will grab you, BUT....

Hakuoki is a very interesting anime, and as far as i'm concern, all of the members of the Shinsengumi (the group in this anime) are based on the actual historic figures. The reason I gave it a 4 is that the heroine is useless, and can be annoying. She even got somebody killed (sorry, just had to say that) I wished that she could have been a little older looking and could actually fight. She has a ...

Hakuoki is a very interesting anime, and as far as i'm concern, all of the members of the Shinsengumi (the group in this anime) are based on the actual historic figures. The reason I gave it a 4 is that the heroine is useless, and can be annoying. She has a short sword that she claims to know how to use it, but never uses it! and she claims to disguse herself as a man, but she still looks like a girl! WTH? Other then that, I just pretend she ain't there :)
The characters (other than the heroine) have very good personalities, and the fact that they are all good-looking makes this anime more entertaining. For guys, this has a lot of sword battles, although you kinda have to get pass all the stupidity from the herione.
Other than the reason that I mentioned, Hakuoki is a very historic and very interesting anime

This show is amazing great sword play and a epic storyline that will grab you. From episodes 1 it will peek your interest, and make you crave more. Its for people who love samurai, japan of battle. It has just the right amount of fighting and a storyline to equal it out. It is a balanced anime packed with action. There really is no down or boring moments about this anime. You will at least like it ...

This show is amazing great sword play and a epic storyline that will grab you. From episodes 1 it will peek your interest, and make you crave more. Its for people who love samurai, japan of battle. It has just the right amount of fighting and a storyline to equal it out. It is a balanced anime packed with action. There really is no down or boring moments about this anime. You will at least like it its one of the better animes out there for action adventure vary few funny moments but some are laughable. You will enjoy it no matter what age you are.

Hakuoki Season 1 Not Bad At All

This is a really good anime! The heroin is kind of (who am I kidding) really annoying for one reason though. She has is carrying around a short sword and can't use it (she apparently knows how to use it)!! She was with the group of kick butt warriors for a looong time, and I don't get why no one taught her. >:O I don't hate her though she is like alot of other heroins, but she really has to get ...

Other than that it's awesome. The fighting is great, the music is HOT (especially the theme), the animation is beautiful, and the other characters amazingness makes you want to stay even if Chizuru (heroin) gets on your nerves.

Over all it is an awesome show that shouldn't be overlooked!

CAN"T WAIT FOR CRUNCHYROLL TO GET SEASON 2!!! (They have the third one already.)

BEST SERIES OF ALL TIME

I love this series, the video game, the anime, everything. It's all based off of historical fact, plus the guys in this are soooo hot! Not to mention the battles that take place are epic. I'd recommend this series to any anime fan. I got into it after watching Rurouni Kenshin. It's a historical anime with fantasy and rommance/angst.

A Historical Fantasy Worth Watching

When I started watching this show, I was terrified it would be a low-level remake of Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X) and I would write a terrible review on it. I was surprised. First, the show pulls off something which I've yet to witness being done in merely 12 episodes---in depth character development. Apart from the main protagonist (Chizuru) being an incompetent blithering fool, every single member of the Shinsengumi is portrayed as flawed, but deadly efficient. From the unflappable Toudou-san to the youngest of the tribe, Heisuke-kun, every single male character is believable and loveable. Hijikata (photo on cover) is the hero of the story it seems and even he is not the perfect human being we see so many historical-based anime trying to show. Hajime Saitou is my favourite anime character of all time, perhaps apart from Vegeta (DBZ) and Roy Mustang (FMA, FMAB) and in this show although Saitou is not the smoking police chief with an attitude we see in Rurouni Kenshin, he is definitely cool and calm, the nerve center of the group along with Hijikata-san. The story starts as a basic introduction to the group and their goals---to gain acceptance in a warring country as being a loyalist faction true to the olden ways. Their frustrations and obstacles are shown beautifully through snippets of conversation and mini-battle scenes, although there is no crazy hack-n-slash samurai nonsense. A twist that comes later perhaps is with the introduction of super-human fighter characters (villains) which kind of kills the seriousness, but if some gaping holes in the storyline can be overlooked, I believe this show is worth every cent Wonderful.

I love Japanese history, and this series definitely holds true to the histories in many ways. I've always enjoyed reading stories about the Shinsengumi and samarais - and both are found here. It's always fun to add paranormal and supernatural things to history retellings - making sure to let the viewers/readers know, of course, that the story is fictional but based on historical events. If you enjoy Ruroni Kenshin, I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy this as well. I am looking forward to Season 2 coming out!

If you were fortunate to have viewed Hakuoki Reimeiroku on CR, you will have a deeper insight as to how the relationships between the Shinsengumi warriors were established but if you did't see it, don't worry, you will not be disappointed by Hakuoki Season 1. I had wanted to view this anime for sometime but was waiting to receive it as a Christmas present. Low and behold, it showed up on CR for the 2012 Thanksgiving holiday. I poured through this anime within 4 to 5 hours and enjoyed every minute of the dialog and animation. The Shinsengumi are all very honorable with depth of conscience and the fact that they are all very attractive will not be lost on female viewers. The stories are strong with political tactics and the "furies" part of the story will appeal to any anime viewer fond of the paranormal. In 2013 two Hakuoki movies are supposed to hit the theaters and a new game is planned for release as well.
