With the members training with YG Entertainment for more than four years, on 28 March 2009, 2NE1 made their musical debut with ‘Lollipop’ for the LG Cyon CF along with fellow labelmate Big Bang. Following this release, they were dubbed as the female ‘Big Bang’ by netizens due to the hip hop and unique fashion style similarities. Although this song was not promoted, despite the release of a music video, ‘Lollipop’ topped various online charts including MNet’s online chart for four weeks in a row and became one of the hit singles of the year.
On May 6 2009, 2NE1 officially debuted with the digital single ‘Fire’ (written and produced by 1TYM’s Teddy). The band released two different music videos on the same day to show their different concepts, a space version and street version; receiving over one million views merely a day after its release. The group's first performance of the song was on May 17, 2009, on SBS's Inkigayo beginning the group's activities. Both the song and the group became popular online, with the song topping MNet's online chart and the group's name becoming a top search term. The group was also rewarded with three Cyworld Digital Music Awards, with both "Lollipop" and "Fire" winning "Song of the Month" awards and the group winning "Rookie of the Month" for May 2009. They received their first Mutizen award during their fourth stage performance in SBS Inkigayo on June 14, 2009. They received their second Mutizen award on SBS Inkigayo on June 21, 2009. Along with their awards successes, 2NE1 signed a deal with Fila to become the new models for their commercial campaign 2 days after 2NE1's Mutizen win.
After the end of the ‘Fire’ promotions, 2NE1 released their follow-up song ‘I Don’t Care’ on July 1, 2009 to “demonstrate a more softer feminine image”, as said by YG CEO Yang Hyun Suk. With the catchy rhythm and hand-waving dance, the song was an instant success - topping the online charts as well as winning a string of number ones on various music shows (winning #1 on KBS Music Bank for five weeks in a row and a triple crown on SBS Inkigayo). A reggae version of the song was also performed to signal the end of promotions for the song, however due to its popularity the remix was digitally released on September 3, 2009. Along with three other groups representing Korea, 2NE1 performed in the 6th Asia Song Festival in September 2009, where they received the 2009's "Asian Newcomer's Award.

On February 9 2010, without prior notice, the group released ‘Try to Follow Me’ for the Samsung Corby Folder CF. The song yet again topped online charts and due to its popularity, the group made a video to accompany the digital single. Over the summer, 2NE1 traveled to Los Angeles, California in order to record English songs for a possible American debut produced by The Black Eyed Peas member will.i.am - enabling fans to anticipate for their International Album (details of the trip can be seen on 2NE1 TV Season 2). The girls also used the American trip to visit fashion designer, Jeremy Scott, who become a firm friend of 2NE1 after their photoshoot with Nylon. 2NE1 frequently wear Jeremy Scott’s designs and he even produced various items for them for their 2010 comeback.
Whilst their international album remains a mystery, 2NE1 came back to Korea to release their first full length album, To Anyone, on September 9, 2010. The album contains 12 tracks including three title songs, namely "Clap Your Hands", "Go Away" and "Can't Nobody", which were promoted simultaneously. They won first place on Mnet M! Countdown for "Clap Your Hands" on the day of their comeback, followed by a K-Chart win the next day on KBS Music Bank for "Go Away", and a mutizen a week after their SBS Inkigayo comeback for "Can't Nobody." Overall, 2NE1 had gained first place eleven times on the various music shows. After their successive wins, the group released their follow-up song ‘It Hurts (Slow)’, which also featured on their album. The music video, produced by Kim Hye Jung (who also produced G-Dragon’s Butterfly), was released on November 1 featuring model and actor Lee Soo Hyuk.
In addition, on October 28, it was revealed that 2NE1's official record label in Japan will be Avex, and that To Anyone would be re-released in Japan on December 8, 2010. However, the release was delayed to an indefinite time. 2NE1 also promoted in Thailand, where To Anyone released on October 23, 2010. Not long after their To Anyone promotions officially ended, they also released ‘Don’t Stop the Music’ which is to be used as the theme song for Yamaha CF. In November 2010, YG Entertainment announced their partnership with Universal Records for the Philippine Market- releasing the Philippine editions of 2NE1′s “The First Mini Album”.
Originally, 2NE1's Japanese debut was planned for December 2010, but this was delayed to March of 2011 due to immense popularity. In addition, there are plans to release a new Korean album between May and June. 2NE1's American promotions with will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas has no set time for release yet, because of the Black Eyed Peas' new album release, The Beginning.
