On first look,
Bokura ga Ita looks like it's yet another cliched soap about the beauty of young love. However, it isn't just an ordinary story as the two characters, Takahashi Nanami and Yano Motoharu go through a series of twists and turns that test the strength of their love. It is neither sweet nor bitter and is believable, for the most part.
(This is an anime so what can you expect?)
Yano
This anime was never monotonous or boring. Some parts were a great laugh, especially the lewd jokes
(Don't worry, this anime is still PG-13!) and others drove me nearly to tears. The simple character designs provided a soft touch to this anime, yet it never came across as a rushed job. You could see the effort put into crafting the characters. In addition, these simple character designs helped me concentrate more on the relationships between the characters.
Nanami
The Characters were really easy to relate to. I could really understand how they felt and why they acted the way they did, though I didn't always agree with them. You have to admit, Nanami and Yano were being a little too indecisive at times and Yamamoto Yuri was more like a phantom than a friend. One character I really liked was Takeuchi Masafumi as he was sensitive and caring. He seemed to really want Nanami to have her happiness in a selfless sort of way and I could tell that he valued his friendship with Yano very much. Those qualities, to me, made him really admirable.
Takeuchi
Music-wise, it is merely average. The opening theme song Kimi Dake Wo (Only You) is rather safe but there isn't much else to dislike about it as it's quite fitting to the storyline of the anime in the first half. However, in the second half, where it starts to get a bit depressing because of all the tears, from Nanami, no doubt, it gets a bit weird. I would have prefered a second opening theme. The many ending theme songs, like the opening theme song, are satisfactory.
Yamamoto
As for the storyline, I felt it was good that they kept to the storyline of the original manga, up to Volume 9 where the anime ended. However, I felt that the anime should have been continued through the rest of the manga, despite the dark storyline of the rest of the manga. I felt that the rest of the storyline is very good and very real, even more so than the storyline of the anime itself. Thus, it is a pity that it is not on anime.
A Beautiful Story
Thus, in conclusion, it is worth a watch for anyone who loves slice-of-life anime. However, I warn you that most find the cliffhanger ending unacceptable and go on to spend many days and nights wondering what happened to the pair as the character development really makes you empathise with them. That was exactly what happened to me before I picked up the manga.
