So far I've seen a few episodes of the first season, and it starts out pretty good, suited to my tastes. I've been delving more into these types of atmospheres, a gritty future with crime, broken down cities, gloominess every where, etc. In this future, there is a new law stating that everyone can carry firearms, so I presume that's what most of the story is based on. There are few things that are concrete enough for me to understand about the anime at this point however.
I suppose this is where I get into the "cons". First off, I simply could not stand the main characters. The characters plot from what I watched (No spoilers) is that 4 girls who work for some organization are some type of bounty hunters / killers for hire, and they drive a mobile home which houses a mech. Each character has an almost copy and paste attitude, the next character is like the last on a higher scale, except for the eldest girl, to an extent. For the most part, the younger three girls act negatively towards anyone besides themselves. It just so happens the next character to enter the plot is a cook, because for what ever reason, they must hire one. At this point, it gets rocky, and typical. The cook they hire has big dreams, but has yet to act on them. At the same time, his resolve is to make it into his big dreams. Meanwhile, you have a character who is scared, nervous, easy to frighten character, who is among intimidating an mean type of characters. In that aspect, its not my type of anime.
What bothers me the most is the gratuitous fan service, if you could even call it that. First off , I'll mention nudity doesn't bother me in the slightest, at least when applied correctly. Now, there is no nudity within the anime to my knowledge. My problem is the ridiculous level of clothing style/ sexual appeal. I won't bother to go into detail except for one character. At almost all times shes on screen, her nipples are bleeding through her shirt. Almost always. Normally I wouldn't even care to notice, but this is right in your face, it becomes unnecessary. Various screen time, the producers felt the only way you could possibly stay interested in the show if they randomly focused on a characters nipples, clevege, ass, and crotch area. You could argue this is the norm in anime, but I would disagree. Unless you've only focused on animes like yumeria, or the big breasted character of bleach, this isn't a norm.
As far as the story is focued, an event would happen within an episode, and end within that episode, and not necessarily be mentioned again. Character relationships progress forward, and that would be possibly the only change within the anime .
The music , I give it a 10. I would try to be proper with the review of the music, but I can't recall the genre of it, only that it really took me by surprise, and I loved it.
Now the animation.. that certainly was a problem. The anime had well drawn characters and objects, towns , scenery, etc. I had to drop the score to a 3 simply because mechs and vehicles were a huge turn off. As far as Mechs and vehicles are concerned, they all have awkward and clumsy movements. I'm assumming this is because whatever program they used to model the vech/mech (Instead of simply animating it like say, Gundam or Gurren Laggan) causes these limitations. I've seen this same type of animation tech in another show called Kappa mikey, and it certainly makes mechs/vechs, or anything rendered in 3d look a bit towards the awful side. It WILL make it pop out and be noticeable, almost annoying because it may not fit in within the show you are watching.
All in all, I felt that the anime was decent to a degree, it didn't truly capture my attention for too long, as the story was sublime and unexplained in the beginning, and the combination of the 3D animation along with the fan service were enough to make me think twice about buying the next set of DVDs, or even renting them for that matter.
