I liked this one. I remember my principle concern with the show was the endless back and forth with L the instant he appeared, with no real adequate explanation as to why Light would rise to the bait. In this film I found my perfectionist streak more than satisfied, and the deviation from the show's plot line at the end was more of a garnish for me than a necessity. As to what makes this film worth watching for he who has had no exposure to Death Note in any of its many forms, I would say that if you like mysteries, are willing to accept at least a small amount of the supernatural in a story, and can hear the word chess without rolling your eyes, then this film is definitely something you would enjoy.
Story: I already addressed this one, but for a general overview I'd say that it's best if you go into this not expecting any knights in shining armor...or at least, not any that are likely to be any use to anyone
Music: Truth be told I watched the dub, so these last three categories are based on that, and they had totally different music playing. (On a related side note - rhcp ftw) EDIT: someone told me it was all the same music after all, go figure...
Characters: Aside from a deus ex machina girlfriend of light, it was all the same guys, and they acted exactly as one would expect they would have. For those of you who have no idea what that means, just know that L and Light are smart, everyone else is stupid, and you would probably like all the dumb folks as people a lot more than the smart ones. I guess the life of a genius must be a lonely one.
Acting (AKA "Animation"): The acting was all good from what I saw. Having watched the first 8 minutes of the sub I can safely say that the purely Japanese version is considerably more melodramatic and over exaggerated, but that's what I've come to expect from Japanese TV, and it didn't take me by surprise. What's more, despite that, I found myself very caught up in the moment at all the scenes of major tension, so for their work in the suspenseful scenes alone I would consider this a film worthy of recommendation.
One final note: Ryuk as a 3D animated character was waaay more creepy looking than I expected... and just as creepy as he needed to be.

Story: Exccellent! I had never read the manga or watched the anime though I've heard it was really good. The movie was fantastic, and I would have to say it kept me on my toes. I was suprized at every corner (although if you've read the manga or watched the anime I doubt you'd be). It was truly a great story line.
Acting: A-plus! I would say everyone did perfectly for their roles.
Music: The music fit the movie perfectly. I couldn't imagine it any better!
Overall: Watch It! It's only 2 hours and 6 minutes so if you want something short and sweet (even shorter than a jdrama) then watch this movie!
