Even to this day, I shout, "Truly unforgettable, so memorable, so irresistible, so full of feelings unbearable for a heart to stop!" You really can't find any of Yuu Watase's wonderful works to simply be in a mere dream. I was inspired, caught, and trapped into this unbelievable story and universe of the four gods. This shows that if you believe in yourself, just like Miaka, you'll also find a great and happy ending to all the problems and adventures in life. It teaches how trust is so important in a friend's life. How love can conquer even four gods who had made this book alive! Both my eyes were caught by this anime. Heh..."Love conquers all!" I really am overjoyed of how the other enemy warriors went numb and didn't hurt Miaka because they were impressed by their love and I guess I wasn't truthfully yelling 'Die' at those merciless killers. Age doesn't matter in love terms, and how old this anime was is never an issue because even if you're just a small wining baby or an old depressed hopeful man/woman, anyone can watch this and be proud of believing in yourself and carrying through as Miaka struggles through problems and adventures but with a great and strong wish that she keeps in her heart! If you are ready to dream, be inspired, cry, feel every bit of emotion that our idiot heroine, and every celestial warrior feels...then this is the best anime anyone could ever love!

this is truly a magnificent series yet! This is one of Yuu watase's best works yet, and definitely makes yuu watase a genius of her own time. I fell in love with the series so far!
It's about a girl named Miaka who, along with her best friend Yuri, fall into a enchanted world and learn that they are priestesses, mainly miaka being the priestess of suzaku, while yuri is the priestess of seiruu. The girls go against each other and are being led by a controlling guy by the name of nakago, who wants the power all to himself and will stop at nothing to obtain that power.
it's a really good series that got me into loving and appreciating yuu watase's work and started the miaka and tamahome fan craze. It's a really good series and you'll love watching it, especially if you like the celestial warriors named chiriko , who is the youngest of the group, chichiro, who wears a mask, tasuki, who is stubborn but pretty cool, mitsukake the doctor who is very kind and warm, hotorori, the emperor who loves miaka deeply, and nuriko, who becomes a man and is very close with tamahome and the others.
a really good series that is definitely worth watching!

Fushigi Yuugi is a rather unassuming and uninspired anime at first. The story goes that Miaka Yuuki is an underachieving, gluttonous schoolgirl. Her friend, Yui Hongou, is much more beautiful and considerably smarter - though the two still tend to be best friends. The two girls go to the library to study for exams, and they end up in a room with banned books after Miaka notices an illusory vermillion Phoenix. The two girls open up a book called The Four Gods of Heaven and Earth (Universe of the Four Gods for those of you that saw this in English), and, as they begin reading it, are transported into Ancient China. There, they come into contact with a shyster named Tamahome, who conveniently comes around whenever Miaka is in trouble. Soon, we find out that Tamahome has a character of 'Oni' (Demon) on his forehead, and he is one of a group called the Suzaku Seichi Seishi. Miaka must find them all in order to summon Suzaku and get 3 wishes. Of course, with this being a Shoujo series, romances happen - a lot, and early on. Fushigi Yuugi is absolutely no exception. Miaka and Tamahome fall for each other early on in the series, and later this develops into something strong - so much so that her friend Yui is drawn into the book...as her rival.
The storyline consists of a lot of interesting twists and turns, many of which are expected, but some that are not. Later in the series, those twists and turns become shocking and emotionally painful for the audiences that have gotten attached to the characters. The emotional complexity in this series is quite smart, battling topics like suicide, unrequited love, and various other things that young teen girls may very well be dealing with. All of this...while Miaka still has to save the world. The only problem is that the storyline starts off very slowly at first, though when this ball is in motion, it builds up quite a bit of momentum.
Characters
The Characters of Fushigi Yuugi tend to be a very diverse lot, and all of them develop quite well during their times in the series. Miaka starts off as an immature crybaby (much like Usagi Tsukino from Sailormoon), but she grows up to be a beautiful, strong and conscientious woman. Tamahome and the others also grow up, fighting through love and loss. Yui even gets shown her low points along with her high points; while she is an intelligent, beautiful young lady with many doors open for her, she envies the love that Miaka is constantly shown and feels lonely. With that loneliness comes an overpowering sense of jealousy and rage. The character development is one of the strongest points in this series, with the only problem being that Miaka and too many of the Suzaku Seichi Seishi are too suctioned onto her in more of a romantic sort of way or in this need to protect her. While she is, of course, the proverbial glue holding the group together, she tends to be coddled too much.
Music
The Music is very repetitive. EXTREMELY repetitive. Some tracks are used several times in an episode. The ending and opening theme set the stage for the series, but it remains the same up until the end of the series. While the opening and ending are both a joy to hear, they become old after a while and are not always well suited to the attitude that the episode may convey.
Animation
The Animation of Fushigi Yuugi is what is to be expected of a shoujo. It is gorgeous to watch, with bishounen with long, sparkling hair, a heroine with large, emotional eyes, and hand-painted backgrounds that are beautifully done, all evoking an image of Ancient China. It is very clear that someone did their work with backgrounds and settings, though there are times where the animation does suffer during some episodes. There are also too many times where the animation switches into caricature, and also there are several times where the animation is lazily done. Still, it doesn't depend a lot on computers like many animations of the time tend to do.
Overall, Fushigi Yuugi is a very good series. It is a series that is often imitated. Fans of shows like InuYasha may appreciate this series, as it is a much more mature and realistic view of a young woman in similar circumstances and how she reacts to the world around her.

this is the most unforgettable anime that i've ever watched.... surely i can't forget the dying scene of nuriko... it was so so sad for miaka... at first she doesn't believe the cry of tamahome calling out nuriko's name... and i, too, really can't forget that scene... and chiriko's death too... so brave to sacrifice his life for the sake of his friends... and mitsukaki's sacrificing death... he sacrificed his own life to cure all the injured, wounded people and soldiers(even if it is the enemy's soldier), esp. the infant named shoka..
the other scene that is unforgettable is the last wish of yui... to bring back the power of suzaku.. after that miaka's beginning to chant some words and she is engulfed by a red light... that means .. the suzaku's power is back...
so happy that tamahome, and tasuki are alived... but it will be more happier if nuriko is not dead...
hope that you have the same opinion as mine....
fushigi yuugi is the best though many says that there are some scenes that needs pg....

Fushigi Yuugi is one of those animes that you can never forget! It has drama, romance, violence, tragedy, and everything else you can think of! This anime will just have you spinning from the beginning to the end! The characters are extremely likeable and the romance between Tamahome and Miaka is the sweetest love story you will ever find. Although this show isn't sugar coated with happiness, it definitely has moments that makes you want to cry for joy. Now, for those who like to watch those happy-go-lucky stories, just know that this anime will definitely change your mind about that. It's a great show that deserves an A in everything! Fushigi Yuugi is a classic!
