A Gothic Sci-fi Drama

This anime is as long and melodramatic as a Korean drama. It takes a while to lay out all the pieces of a very complex story, and the dark art style adds to the despairing, dramatic overtone of the entire story. I didn't care for the opening or ending theme music, and the in-show music was unnecessarily over-dramatic.

Again, the cast of characters and organizations and scientific concepts is quite large; Gilgamesh even draws on and references various legends of ancient cultures. Ultimately, everything and everyone seems to be fighting for their own self-gain, fame, or personal interest. Combined with an apparent lack of any central government or organization, the effect is creating a world in which life is fractured and the world is understood in terms of how it directly affects each person.

No bones about it, this anime is dark, cynical, twisted, and thick with emotion and ethical questions. Recommended if you like Darker than Black, Wolf's Rain, or (the art from) Witch Hunter Robin.
