Overall: This was one of my favorite anime's its a relatable story that is very engaging
Storyline: Although slow paced at times, it truly delivers during the fight sequences letting you understand the minds of the fighters in the ring and out.
Music: The music sets the tone for the anime quite well delivering hard guitar and strong vocals giving a intense strong feeling to the anime
Characters: All the characters in this anime are just superb, they all work perfectly together, the love interest is there just far away yet so close at times, the fighters personalities in the ring and out make you respect the characters and love them at the same time.
Animation: Although this anime has extremely well executed fight sequences the animation doesnt seem to hold up too well outside of the ring as it seems somewhat flat at times, but the intense fighting puts this animation style to the test and it passes with flying colors.

Hajime no Ippo, the thing that saved my love for anime when Naruto deteriorated into dreary, long winded battles. My dear Hajime no Ippo...
right then,
LET'S GET STARTED.
So the story is about this high schooler who goes by the name of Ippo Makunoichi. timid, shy, very friendly, but unable to stand up for himself. His life was a bit of a bore helping his mother at their fishing business, getting picked on by bullies before a serious boxing contender by the name of Mamoru Takamura saves him. Ippo then wonders what it'll be like to be strong; hence, he joins the world of boxing! He meets Genji Kamogawa, a boxing coach who then steers Ippo upwards into the pro-ring, and becomes a member of his gym, meeting a wide variety of characters inside and out of the ring.
This is something that probably only appealed to me, as this was my first anime that was in the sports genre, but... Hajime no Ippo is a tad bit more realistic than say, ninja's conjuring magic attacks out of the environment or samurai running about killing ghosts (NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT), which got me really interested. However, it is an anime, so there was obviously some exaggeration in places (Welcome exaggerations they were too! I'll not go into detail, but when a boxer went about using their best punch, the animation would blur slightly, slow down, and the tension would increase; as if you felt that this was going to be a make or break attack).
Another thing that grew on me was the characters; Ippo Makunoichi himself is likeable enough, and like most protagonists in animes, has that undying spirit that allows him to get up from the floor, no matter how badly he's been beaten. But there are other characters who you also begin to like! Takamura is an arrogant boxing monster who has an immature streak a mile wide, Kimura and Aoki are the hilarious underdogs who help Ippo where they can, Miyata, Ippo's rival and idol, Genji the coach who forces them to push their limits... people outside the ring are also colourful, like Ippo's mother, his former bullies, etc!
One more thing; Ippo rarely does battle against some generic enemy. In the ring, pretty much everyone has a goal, a reason as to why they fight, a personality, a preferred way of fighting, a uniqueness about them. The many technicalities and styles and forms of punches in fighting also get expanded on; some of them are a little exaggerated, but that's anime folks.
Alrighty, time to expand on the scores I gave!
The storyline is well put together. Drama, grudge matches, R&R are all weaved together to make a story that you'll enjoy.
The music... I think I gave it too many stars. It deserves, at most, a 3. It just doesn't seem like it's trying very hard. It's difficult to describe, you'll see what I mean when you try the first episode.
The characters, solid gold! Like I said above, there's a wide cast, with their own personality! I'd go further, but I'd start spoiling. Best not do dat. </3
Animation is fairly good, for way back when. I'm not at all sure when it was made, but the animation is generally aye ok. As the anime progresses (like all good anime that grow well with age) the animation gets sharper, cleaner, and better.
Finally, overall? If you like anime with good characters, beat 'em ups or just generally good anime, I'd heartily recommend it. Give it a try, and you won't regret it!
