Overview
Takumi Fujiwara is the son of the owner of a local tofu shop. At night, Fujiwara gets in his souped up AE86 Sprinter Trueno and races on the seldom-used Japanese mountain roads. One night, the Akagi Red Suns team, a racing club, challenges the Akina Speed Stars to a race on the mountain where Fujiwara lives. Keisuke, one of the leaders of the Red Suns, races his legendary Mazda, only to be beaten by the mysterious Fujiwara.

The Legend of the Hachi-Roku

Along with the human cast of characters, the cars of the show also share large amount of the spotlight.
Since the creator of the manga, Shuichi Shigeno, is a huge car enthusiast he has done a fantastic job of authentically recreating most 80's and 90's contemporary Japanese sports cars and sedans with great detail to every aspect of every car. Though most viewers that aren't huge car fans will just glance over the cars as mundane set pieces, to the trained JDM(Japanese Domestic Market) enthusiasts eye the detail in the cars is meticulous.

Just focusing on the main protagonist's car, a mid to late 80's Toyota Sprinter Trueno(aka Toyota Corolla GTS in the US) is featured extensively through the entire first season, along with the following "stages" that followed. The actual specs of Takumi's "hachi roku" are never really explained through most of the first stage, but it's been tuned by his father to be fast in the mountains of Gunma. The car features a "panda" paint scheme, which consists of a white body with black molding and a black set of RS Watanabe wheels, along with his father's tofu shop name on the side. Since the manga and shows inception, this particular car and paint scheme has become iconic not just in Japan, but around the world. Along with the help of Best Motorings own Keichi Tsuchiya, who also serves as a technical consultant on the manga and anime, the hachi-roku has become this generations BMW 2002 or Datsun 510.

Though the standard AE86 in the show is powered by a naturally aspirated 4 cylinder engine, which probably doesn't make more than 200hp at the beginning of series, a combination Takumi's uncanny driving skill and the technical nature of racing down on mountain roads makes for a unexpected surprise for opponents of much larger and powerful cars. Through out the series the races which Takumi fights in play along like David vs. Goliath, with such JDM greats as the Nissan Skyline GTR and Silvia, Mazda RX-7 FC and FD, Honda Civic and Integra Type-R all meeting their demises at the hands of a two decade old Toyota Sprinter. It makes for a great under dog story, and has since been the inspiration of many car enthusiasts who don't have the large bank accounts to make uber-powerful street racers, and instead can focus more on driving skills in technical settings like back roads and "touges".
