Janne da Arc is a five-member Japanese ock band, first formed in 1989 by Yasu, You, and Ka-yu; however, a few months later Ka-yu left the band.
In 1991 Yasu and You teamed up with Kiyo and started formally going by the name 'Janne da Arc'. Ka-yu and Shuji teamed up with the band in 1992.
They performed most Indies music 'til 1996. Until that year, Janne da Arc were releasing demo tapes only. In 1996 Janne da Arc started commercially releasing singles and in 1997, their debut album, 'D.N.A.' was released. From then they gathered enough fans to create a small but solid fan base that lasts to this day.
Their music is usually characterised by a mix of heavier music with pop. They also have heavy keyboard use in their music, which is apparently uncommon in Japanese rock genre.
On 26 January this year Janne da Arc is put on hiatus to allow its members to pursue solo projects.
For trivia fans: Yasu named the group after a character named 'ジャンヌ・ダルク' (Jannu Daruku) from Go Nagai's manga series, 'Devilman'.
