Born on 30 August, 1988, Jyongri (ジョンリ) is a Japanese singer-songwriter.
She was born in Osaka where she learned to play classical piano and singing, but after seeing a climatic gospel singing scene in American film, 'Sister Act 2', Jyongri decided to learn gospel singing, which led her to take singing seriously.
At 15 and fluent in English, she attended the Berkeley Music Institute in the US for its five-week summer program where she discovered she was the only Asian in her class. Yet she learned to interact with other people of different nationalities and cultures and this left an impact on her.
After winning a contract with Toshiba-EMI, Jyongri decided to leave Waseda University, Osaka, to devote herself to her music and song writing career.
On 12 December 2006 she made her debut with her single 'Possession / My All For You', which went to #15 in the Oricon Weekly Chart on its first day.
Already she's been compared with Utada Hikaru, who happens to be Jyongri's one of favourite idols.
Her debut album 'Close To Fantasy' is due to be released in early 2007.
