Based on a manga serialized in Young Magazine by Nobuyuki Fukumoto (Akagi) about a gambler named Kaiji.
The main character, Ito Kaiji, is a lazier than normal guy who lives day by day without any desire to do anything. His life consists of working part time, gambling with his friends and always ending up losing money.
He always cries blaming himself that he is broke, yet he still doesn't want to work. Basically, he IS a loser.
Then one day, he is visited by Endo, a lender of a loans company. Kaiji had a 3,850,000 yen debt because he signed to make a guaranteed debt for a person he hardly knew. Endo convinces Kaiji to go into a gambling ship called 'Espoir' to pay off his debts. He says the ship was for the 'salvation' of young men in debt, with a high chance of 'making it out of the ship' with some extra cash if lucky.
As of 7 April, 2010, only one series of Kaiji has been produced. Madhouse has revealed plans to release a second series.
The first series follows Kaiji as he participates in four gambles:
Restricted Rock-Paper-Scissors

Kaiji is scammed into boarding the Espoir where his nightmares begin. Aboard the ship, there are several other nobodies like him who are all forced to participate in a strange game: Restricted Rock-Paper-Scissors. This game is the same as the original but is instead played with cards. Contestants are given four of each hand (ie. 4 rocks, 4 scissors, and 4 papers) for a total of 12 cards. Contestants then play against each other wagering stars they were given prior to the game's commencement (each star has a value of millions of yen). Players are required to expend all of their cards through gameplay and finish the night with at least three stars or else be sent to the "other room."
Human Derby

This game was separated into two parts. Contestants are placed into a vertical coffin and then raised an unknown height and then released. They are then required to race each other to the other side of a narrow beam (that gets narrower the further they progress). Bets are being placed on them, and the people who come first and second for each heat are given rewards. Falling at this stage results in potentialy fatal injuries (they are several stories above the ground.) Afterwards, it is revealed to the winners and runner-ups of each heat that their rewards are useless (they were given a coupon) unless they participate in another beam-crossing challenge. However, this time the beam is at the top of a tall building (comparable to a skyscraper): falling off the beam here means certain death. Adding to this, the beam has a mild electric current running through it so the contestants will be electrocuted and fall off if they touch it with their hands. Because of these conditions, the beam-crossing challenge is not a race this time around; however, they must cross to the other side before the time limit on their coupon expires.
E-Card

Like Restricted Rock-Paper-Scissors, this is also a card game. Kaiji's opponent is the psychological mastermind: Tonegawa, who is Endo's superior. This game is played with 10 cards: eight citizens, one slave, and one emperor. Each player is given five cards; one player plays as the emperor side (four citizens + one emperor), and the other plays as the slave side (four citizens + one slave). They each place a card on the table face-down and then reveal to the other player. The emperor beats the citizens, and the citizens beat the slave; however, the slave beats the emperor. Therefore, the emperor side has a huge advantage and so since the slave side has lower odds of winning, the payout is five times the bet. Since Kaiji has no money to bet for this gamble, he must wear a machine that will either drill out his eye or his ear. He wagers the distance that the drill will move to the organ, with the minimum bet being 1mm, and the maximum bet being 10mm. The organ will be destroyed after 30mm. Each mm is worth 100,000Y on the Emperor side, and 500,000Y on the Slave side.
Tissue-Box Raffle

This game was actually created by Kaiji himself on his way out after E-Card. This game is essentially just a lottery in which they take turns pulling out tickets from a tissue box. The first person to draw the marked raffle ticket will win the prize. The wager for this was 100,000,000Y, but Kaiji was forced to wager 20,000,000Y and four of his fingers.
