Quick Summary
The story revolves around a boy named Ryoutaro Nogami who always has bad luck and in many ways fails life. He meets some strange beings from the future who want to use people's memories to go into the past and destroy it. Ryoutaro is a "singular point" which means any changes to the past do not affect him and so he fights these future creatures called "Imagin". Ryoutaro meets some non-evil Imagin and teams up with them to become Kamen Rider Den-O and they go back in time to stop the evil Imagin from destroying time. The focus is mostly on Momotaros (First Imagin Ryoutaro befriends), Ryoutaro, and trains. Yes, there are many trains in this.
Actual Review
This is my first Kamen Rider series actually, so I guess I'm a little biased? Well I really enjoyed Den-O, it was REALLY comedy-heavy, but it gets really emotional and serious the last like 12 episode for some reason. I think the beginning was rushed to introduce all the imagin and then at the end they introduce a new character and start messing with your minds. They have SO MANY lose ends that really pissed me off until the end where they had to reveal everything. I think if you watch it twice, you'll appreciate it more.
Another thing is the movie promotion (I'm talking about Ore, Tanjou). I was lucky I could watch that movie (it fits PERFECTLY between episodes 27 and 28), but if you couldn't, you'd probably feel cheated.
Between episodes 27 and 28 they stick the Den-O movie, I don't mind the show promoting the movie like at the ends of the episodes or anything, that's fine. What really made me mad is they gave the BACKGROUND to the movie and built up all this curiosity and then.... Episode 28 comes and it's all like "oh yea that guy was hard to fight, that was quite an adventure". So basically, if you didn't watch the movie, you are left thinking "woah wft?!" and it's like the worst thing ever. The movie itself was pretty cool, actually, and kinda short so it didn't bother me too much.
Okay now about the music and some other things. I LOVED the music in Den-O. Well I love most Kamen Rider music, but Den-O had some pretty sick-nasty music. Every imagin had their theme and I really liked it. In one episode it's about a dude who plays the piano and he PLAYS DOUBLE ACTION SWORD FORM on the piano. That alone is simply amazing. I enjoyed listening to all the Imagin singing the opening, especially Ryuutaros rapping, that was... amusing. The best song, in my opinion, was Action-ZERO 2010, so after you watch the series, listen to that.
So overall Den-O is awesome and you should go watch it now. It's 49 episodes, so about double the average anime length (25-26 episodes). Though, 49 episodes is normal for a Kamen Rider series. If you have a long break from school/work or wanna kill some time, go watch it. It took me a total of 2 weeks to watch the whole thing, but then again I'm on summer holiday so I have nothing else to do.
It's really funny and the Imagin are pretty cool. The fights were so-so and sometimes I felt like the bad Imagin were just there to provide more problems, well they are kinda... They're never fully explained and the ending really annoyed me for some reason. Either way, go watch Den-O, this series is heavily underrated. I don't know why no one knows about this. Oh and last thing, this isn't power rangers, silly people. I really hated Super Sentai (power rangers in US), but this is so much better.
This series is probably your 2nd destiny (first destiny is reborn), so definitely go watch it. I don't think it's on CR, but I bought the complete DVD set for about $30.00 USD. If you can, watch Ore, Tanjou! because if you don't you'll just hate yourself when episodes 27 and 28 come along, trust me. So go watch it now ><
