Mutsumi Otohime

[Edit]
Overview
Mutsumi Otohime (乙姫 むつみ, Otohime Mutsumi) is a very gentle, very frail, anemic, clumsy, and soft-spoken 20 year old girl. Despite her poor physical health, she is very resilient and is able to quickly recover from any injury, much like Keitaro. She has a very sweet and generous personality, often sacrificing her own happiness for others. She lives on or near the island of Okinawa and has an affinity for watermelons and turtles. She met Keitaro and Naru while taking some time off for a brief vacation after flunking her entrance exam to Todai for the third time in a row, just like Keitaro. Additionally, Mutsumi is reputed to have the largest bust size out of all the girls.

Due to frequent near-death experiences, her outlook on life is somewhat disconnected with reality, a point reinforced by her almost surreal optimism. She has a number of unusual qualities such as being able to speak "turtlese", which she uses to communicate with her turtles and a guessing method she uses for exams which involves the sides of a pencil. Despite her eccentricities she is extremely intelligent, scoring full marks in the practice exams – yet still failing to get into Tokyo University due to simple mistakes such as forgetting to write her name on the test paper.

Her surname, Otohime, comes from the legend of Urashima Tarō, where Otohime is the beautiful daughter of the Sea King and the eventual wife of Urashima. Otohime first appears in the legend as a beautiful five colored sea turtle, providing the basis for Mutsumi's association with supernatural turtles. Her character design was supposedly modelled on Aeris of Final Fantasy fame. In the opening chapter of manga volume 14, Mutsumi dons an outfit closely resembling that of Aeris.

When she was younger and living in Hinata, Mutsumi claims to have played matchmaker for Naru and Keitaro after it became clear that she wanted to go to Tokyo University with him. Although she loved Keitaro, she let him go for Naru's sake by deliberately losing a game of rock-paper-scissors to decide which of them would become Keitaro's wife, which is mirrored by Shinobu in the Love Hina Again OVA. She then made a promise with Naru that both she and her would later go to Tokyo University, so that Naru would remember the promise made to Keitaro. Before leaving Hinata, she gave Naru her Liddo-kun doll in memory of their friendship. This story is given credence by later discoveries, particularly in volume 14 of the manga. Like Keitaro and Naru, she finally passes the Todai entrance exam. She studies there, later entering graduate school. At the end of the manga she helps out in organizing Keitaro and Naru's wedding by bringing a plethora of watermelons.

Extended Information

Personality/Personal life
Mutsumi has a very sweet and generous personality being the epitome of caring, often sacrificing her own happiness for her friends and others. She lives on an small island off the coast of Okinawa's main island West of its capitol Naha, with her mom(Natsumi) and her dad( first name unknown) and 7 younger siblings making her the eldest child. She also has an affinity for watermelons and turtles namely
her pet/friend Tama which is a "hot springs turtle" which her family had many of with her becoming an expert of sorts in the bio-stats and care for said turtles.

Anemia
Mutsumi has anemia and fainted often which caused all sorts of comical situations for the group, but she is actually extremely resilient, having a strong vice like grip even when she first appeared and is seemingly able to recover very quickly from injury, just like Keitaro. Once after being asked by Keitaro she has been being stated by a doctor as being "... as healthy as a horse". Indeed in both manga and anime, Naru notices the similarities between Keitaro and Mutsumi, most notably when they thought they first met Mutsumi on Keitaro's trip to Kyoto. Over the course of the manga she gradually gets over her anemia to a point that in the latter parts it has apparently left her.

Insight facts
She shows superlative optimism when faced with even the most difficult situations (i.e. having fun while riding on a ship during a bad storm at sea) and enjoys life. She has a number of unusual abilities, such as being able to speak "turtlese", which she uses to communicate with her turtles namely Tama, the extreme habit of putting others happiness before herself, a very strong like for watermelons and she has propensity for sleepwalking. This latter 'talent' leads her into trouble (once she sleepwalked out her window and was hit by a car). Despite her many eccentricities she is extremely intelligent, scoring full marks in the practice exams. Yet she still fails to get into Tokyo University because, amongst other things, she forgets to write her name on the test paper, causing her to obtain a grade Z on one test paper or like another time from fainting from her anemia before the exams.

Later as the story develops it is revealed in volume 10 that, as a young child Mutsumi spent some time living at the Hinata inn. She had learned of the stories of how "If a couple was to attend Tokyo U together they will find happiness." and in turn told Keitaro of the story, because she(Mutsumi) loved Keitaro and wanted to go to to Tokyo U with him. She then played matchmaker for Naru and Keitaro after it became clear that Naru as a child was clingy and also liked Keitaro just like Mutsumi did. Mutsumi let him go for her friend Naru's sake by deliberately losing a game of rock-paper-scissors to decide which of them would become Keitaro's wife. She knew that Naru would always pick scissors.

Even after that Naru had forgotten all about her promise to Keitaro, Mutsumi then made a subsequent promise with Naru that both of them would later go to Tokyo University so Naru would remember the promise made to Keitaro. Before leaving Hinata, she gave Naru her Liddo-kun doll in memory of their friendship. She eventually moves to an apartment very close to the Hinata Inn and starts working at the Hinata Teashop for Haruka Urashima, even staying in a spare room at Haruka's Teashop right next to the Inn after her apartment burnt down on New Year’s Eve. Like Keitaro and Naru, she finally passes the Todai entrance exam, discovering her result just before setting off to rescue Keitaro from the island of Pararakelse. She ends up being the only member of the Hinata clan to go on to graduate school.

She studies at Todai (Tokyo U), later entering graduate school. Mutsumi is unique to ever grace the Hinata She can seem to be clumsy at one moment and then have genius level intelligence the next. Mutsumi's anemia also adds to her unique personality in that she will be fine one moment and then just faint the next.she also seems to faint alot more when she's around Keitaro. Mutsumi is the reason that the Hinata Apartments has Tama, she gave Tama to Keitaro at the end of their Kyoto trip. One could say that Mutsumi is probably the most emotionally mature out of all the characters as well. She changes very little through the series but seems to know exactly what she wants and how to achieve it. Always showing empathy and kindness to others, She never seems to get mad and always seems to show up at just the right time whenever the group needs something. Overall she easily sticks out as one of the sweetest manga characters of all time.

Cooking Prowess
Mutsumi is an excellent cook and also excels at making cakes,
Due to making cakes for in preparation for Valentines Day, just like Keitaro did for White Day.

Anime vs.Manga
Mutsumi is a main lead character just as Keitaro and Narusegawa and plays a central part to the main story the promise girl with it being either Mutsumi or Narusegawa. But due to the anime having to be more hastily finished due to budget problems from the studio. Mutsumi appears in less than half of only 25 TV episodes of Love Hina. leading to some to miss Mutsumi's main cast status.
In contrast she appears much more in the Love Hina mangas due to its many story arcs that includes her or involves her directly and due to the length of the mangas has much more Otohime overall.
in short if the anime was like it's manga counterpart it would be much longer without filler.

Extra Facts
Mutsumi is 10 months older than Keitaro.

Mutsumi has lived in the following places in chronological order.
1.Okinawa
2.Hinata Inn
3.Okinawa
4.Mutsumi's apartment (down the hill across the street from the Hinata)
5.Extra room at Haruka's tea shop and some time just stays over at the Hinata inn.

Mutsumi’s like of watermelon coincides whether on purpose or merely coincidental with the fact watermelon has a super concentration of lycopene, which is a good treatment for anemia.

At the end of the manga she helps out in organizing Keitaro and Naru's wedding by bringing a plethora of watermelons and she puts on the wedding dress during the wedding.

Tamago or Tama for short was originally Mutsumi's pet, That she gives to Keitaro after him and Naru help her get back to her home in Okinawa. But Tama's friendship with her is as close as ever.

Her surname, Otohime, comes from the legends one of which is of Urashima Tarō, Otohime first appears in the legend as a beautiful five colored sea turtle, providing the basis for Mutsumi's association with supernatural turtles. Also in the legends of Otohime where Otohime the beautiful daughter of the Sea King is the eventual wife of Hoori a.k.a. (Yamasachihiko). Her character design was supposedly modeled on Aeris Gainsborough of Final Fantasy 7 fame. In the opening chapter of manga volume 14, Mutsumi dons an outfit closely resembling that of Aeris.

Tokyopop sometimes misspells her name as "Mitsumi" or "Matsumi".
