Nakago

Nakago (心宿, Nakago), considered to be the ringleader of all the Seiryū warriors, is the main antagonist of Fushigi Yūgi. His cold demeanor and presence are often the drive behind Yui's decisions during the early story stages. Feared by all the Seiryū Celestial Warriors, Nakago is both merciless and charismatic; he eliminates those whose usefulness to him is exhausted and skillfully manipulates others into doing as he wishes. A man who allows for no emotional distraction or wasted action, few actually know what Nakago is thinking. He is 25 years old and was born in the western region of Kutō in the Hin Tribe.

Nakago’s might as a Celestial Warrior is superior to all the Suzaku warriors combined and his powers allow him to manipulate chi, thus enabling himself to become psychokinetic, fire energy blasts, and set up force fields. In battle, Nakago also utilizes a whip and sword.

Nakago is shogun of Kutō and one of the country’s highest ranking generals, commanding two thirds of Kutō’s army. Nakago is the last of the Hin Tribe, a group that had been destroyed at the orders of the Emperor of Kutō because it had been hated by everyone in Kutō. When a young Nakago witnessed his mother being raped, his powers manifested and he killed the soldier assaulting his mother as well his own mother by mistake. The surviving soldiers recognized him as a Celestial Warrior and brought Nakago to the Emperor. The Emperor sexually abused Nakago because of the boy’s natural beauty and his initial lack of control of his powers. Nakago, as he mastered complete control over his abilities, was eventually assigned to become a general of Kutō.

Nakago’s apparent intention is to take over not only ‘’The Universe of Four Gods’’, but also the real world. To this end, he manipulates Yui into becoming the Priestess of Seiryū in order to use the god’s power to do so. When he arrives the real world in attempt to take it over, Nakago is killed by Tamahome when Miaka finally seals away Seiryū.

Yu Watase notes on several occasions in the chapter notes, as well in the second installment of the omake "The Tale of the Forbidden Women's Hot Spring" from the series 1 OVA (as stated by Nakago himself), that Nakago is her favourite character.
