Nanao Ise

Nanao Ise is the lieutenant or vice captain of Division 8 in the Soul Reaper Society under Captain Shunsui Kyoraku. She is also the Vice-President of the Shinigami Women’s Association under the president Yachiru Kusajishi. She has been part of the 8th Division since childhood. She was mentored by Lisa Yadomaru. She has black hair blue eyes and wears glasses. She is usually seen carrying a large book. The book and glasses gives her the look of a librarian or teacher. She is also an avid reader.

Nanao Ise seems to be a very serious Shinigami. Her captain Shunsui Kyoraku teases and flirts with her. These antics make her angry and she ends up chastising or hitting him. When she is really angry she takes off her glasses which frightens everyone who sees it. Shunsui is lazy as well so Nanao has to do his paperwork and remind him about his duties.

Nanao seems to rely on magic rather than the more traditional shinigami tactics. In this regard she is similar to Yachiru Kusajishi and Nemu Kurotsuchi. Nanao serves comedic purposes by being the straight woman to Shunsui Kyoraku, Yachiru Kusajishi and Rangiku Matsumoto.
