A game by the same man that brought us Killer7, a game which I never played, comes this new tale of betrayal, sadness, and revenge. It also comes with a side of frustration. Yet, it provides a worthwhile game that is definitely something worth checking out.
It stars Travis Touchdown, a man with a weird name that happens to be an assassin, the number 11 assassin. In this quest of manliness, you must kill each of the ranked 10 assassins in order to become number 1. That's the main meat of the story. The subplots are lacking, making the characters feel a bit lackluster, though this does not mean the characters are full of personality and not hard to love. Travis could definitely be an idiot and has the grace of a drunk, but inside, he actually is a good-spirited kind of guy. Sophia is charmingly mad, as she makes no sense to herself. One minute, she's bashing Travis, then she will confess her love during the conversation. The assassins themselves are funny and entertaining. It maybe an overall lackluster plot, but it definitely has great characters to back it up.
The music is pretty catchy at times. It has the genres of metal, rock, jazz, and so on, but no orchestral score. Not that it really needs one, but a few cues couldn't hurt.
The game offers the game as this sort of sandbox game, much like Grand Theft Auto. It's an open-world environment and has the main missions as well as side missions to earn cash to go to the next assassin rank. The side quests are a bit repetitive, but they are plenty of chores to do that it doesn't get old quickly. The one problem that I had with this game is the bike you are given to drive around in. It's very stiff at times when you're turning. When you crash, you have to wait a few seconds to get up, brush yourself off, then pick up the bike, wait a few seconds, and then you could go. It's annoying if you don't get the hang of it.
The combat itself is pretty repetitive at times, too. You're basic attack is hitting the A button many times until you are prompted to swing the remote horizontally or vertically for a strong, sometimes finishing, move. The weapons you have don't offer much strength or agility, especially when you're buying new ones. The only thing that you should really care about is the energy in the weapon.
The graphics are nicely cel-shaded, which is really nice to see when you kill your enemies. The game is a blood bath, so it's definitely not for kids. When you kill an enemy, they sprout out blood like Brain Dead, with blood spraying all over the place. It looks good and it's hilarious at the same time. The frame rate might chug a little bit, but that's mostly when you have a lot of enemies that spray blood at the same time, or when you're in the open world.
The game is a great buy for those who have the Wii. Don't be afraid to get it, because there will be a sequel not too far from being released. Definitely check it out.
