Rose of Versailles is a complex and rewarding shoujo adaptation, the majority of which was directed by Osamu Dezaki.
The show follows the exploits of French officer Oscar de Jarjeyes, a fictional noblewoman who is raised as a man and is assigned to protect incoming princess Marie Antoinette.
Rose of Versailles has something for everyone. The show features intense action scenes and thick melodrama, but it never panders. Every episode is in service to its characters and narrative.
This show is also dense. The average episode of Rose of Versailles contains as much character development, action and narrative advancement as an entire arc of any other show. There's no way I could have predicted the show would turn out the way it did. It's a true epic, spanning some twenty years of history at breakneck speed.
Oscar is an exciting protagonist to follow through the difficult waters of the French revolution. Her bravery and passion are exciting and she approaches each of the factions of the period with pragmatism and intelligence. The show skillfully navigates politics, history and high drama in each arc.
The show's music is exciting. The score drives each episode forward, the intro is gorgeous, and the first few bars of the ending theme haunt my dreams.
I never finished an episode of this show without immediately wanting to start the next. It's hands-down one of the best dramas I've seen animated.
