Overview
This is a list of the fictional characters featured in the Highschool of the Dead manga by Daisuke Satō and Shōji Satō. The series follows a group of high school students, the high school's nurse, and a young girl as they fight their way to safety through the deadly streets of Japan during a worldwide catastrophic event known as the "Outbreak". Led by sophomore Takashi Komuro, the focal group of survivors consists of six others and a small dog. For the most, each individual plays a key role in maintaining everyone's survivability. The authors used role-playing terminology to categorize the specific attributes each character brings to the group. Rei Miyamoto, Saeko Busujima, and Kohta Hirano are considered fighters because of their exceptional skills with weapons; Saya Takagi described as the wizard due to her intelligence and deduction skills; Shizuka Marikawa assigned the role of priest as she is a licensed physician. Within the story, anyone who had been infected and turned into a zombie are called "them" as they are no longer considered human by any of the living characters.

The manga series also features numerous other characters, some of which play antagonistic roles. An example of this is Shido, a teacher at Fujimi High School, who is depicted as manipulative and sadistic. He is the object of disgust by Saeko and more so by Rei who hates him for ruining her life and her father's reputation.

Saeko Busujima is one of the Fujima High survivors. A high school third-year and president of the kendo club. Her calm and elegant personality hides her dark sadistic nature.

Origin: Saeko Busujima is a student of Fujimi High School in Japan and president of the Kendo Club. Years before the zombie outbreak that swept the world, Saeko was molested on the streets on her way home from school, but Saeko proved to be too much against this pervert and easily got the upper hand. Using her wooden bokken, she beat the man nearly to death and was only stopped by the police who soon arrived. She didn't lash out of fear. It excited her. It was this night she became aware of her sadistic pleasure for violence. Her elegant and calm nature hides her violent desires. She may be the survivors greatest fighter, but she could also be their greatest threat.

Creation: The character of Saeko Busujima is a main character of the manga/anime series Highschool of the Dead that was written by Daisuke Sato and illustrated by Shouji Sato. The series first began serialization in Fujimi Shobo's Monthly Dragon Age magazine in July 2006. The creators of the series classified characters using role-playing game terminology, and Saeko is one of the three Fighters due to her combat skill. She has long purple hair and originally wears a long-skirt style school uniform. She has a reliable and strong personality with a great sense of honor, morality, and comrodery. Though, her calm demeanor hides a violent and sadistic desire.

Her first appearance was in Hightschool of the Dead Volume 1 CH. 1 "Spring of the Dead", and her first anime appearance was in High School of the Dead - Episode 1 "Spring of the Dead". Her character in the Japanese series is voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro, and the U.S. dub produced by Section 23 is done by Taylor Hannah. Saeko's original weapon is a wooden sword called a bokken, used in Kendo competitions. She later is given a katana called the Murata-tou by Saya Takagi's father Souichiro.

Though she is the second oldest of the initial survivors, she has the smallest bust at 83cm D-cup. In a popularity ranking held by Dragon Age magazine, four characters from Highschool of the Dead were in the top 10, and Saeko took the number one spot.

Saeko Busujima's original design in HOTD: Her first appearance in Highschool of the Dead had her wearing a basic school uniform of Fujima High School, and is one of the most respected students of the school. She teamed up with second-year Takashi Komuro's group at the school and has remained loyal to his lead. She prefers loose clothing that wont interfere with her movement in battle.

Saeko Busujima's second outfit As the series progresses, she's given a superbly crafted katana as her new weapon. Her outfit is also changed to a small skirt, thigh-high stockings with garters, her school uniform top, pads for her elbows and shins, and platformed boots. The power with which she wields her blade is said to be even more deadly than a bullet. That didn't stop her from taking a thigh holstered side arm when they reached the police station.

Saeko eventually discloses that in the past she was sexually assaulted, and beat the perpetrator nearly to death, breaking his bones with her bokken. Enjoying herself to the level of sexual excitement. The joy she gains from harming people she deems as “bad" becomes a sense of worry that she could one day turn upon the friends she's made. This is because she believes this dark side to be her true nature. Takashi would be the one who would give her hope by telling her that no matter how far she thinks she's tainted by darkness that he admires her and would give her a reason to live on. Saeko is a rival for the affections of Takashi Komuro with Rei Miyamoto, often blushing when he would compliment her on her appearance.

Recently: After surviving the outbreak at the mall they were taking temporary shelter in, Saeko and the others were rescued from what seems like sure death by the Japanese SDF.

Major Story Arcs: Spring of the Dead
Saeko Busuyima on the day of the Spring of the DeadSeako was once the star of the school Kendo Club before the "Spring of the Dead" at Fujimi High School and living quietly as an admired upper classman. On the day of the outbreak, Saeko was in the Kendo club's practice gym. Hearing the outcries and screams, she grabbed her wooden practice sword and went to investigate. What she found was her fellow students and teachers surrounding her and they were out to kill. She quickly realized that a strike to the head was the only way to kill "Them" (The title the zombies were given).

The first survivors she would comes across were in the school's nurse's office. A second-year boy and the school nurse, Shizuka Marikawa. The boy had been bitten, and Saeko offered to save him from the fate of turning to the undead if wished. Despite Shizuka's objections, the boy happily accepted the offer and Saeko ended his life with a swift strike to the head. The first human life she has ever taken. While heading to the teacher's office to get Shizuka's car keys for an escape, she would only block the attacks of Them or knock them down, explaining that killing all of them that got close would take too long and allow more to surround them. After Shizuka tripped over due to her tight-brand name skirt, Saeko ripped the side open to the waist. As they moved forward, another scream of a survivor was heard. The two moved into help, but the zombie was already dead. There they met up with four other students, Kohta Hirano; Saya Takagi; Rei Miyamoto; and Takashi Komuro. They exchanged greetings and teamed up to move to the teachers offices. With their increased numbers came safety, but Shizuka only had a compact car. They came together as a team to escape, discover their families status, and find somewhere to take shelter.

The survivors of Fujimi High School: The team would escape the school with several other survivors they found with a school bus used for field trips, and also took on a small group of students being led by a teacher named Shido Koichi.

As they sped along through the chaos in the streets, they could only witness the horrors that surrounded them. Morale was low in the bus and some of the students began lashing out and panicking. Shido Koichi began giving a grand speech as he was attempting to take control of the group. Some were falling under his maniacal charm, but not the team of Saeko and Takashi. When it seemed he had taken on leadership. Rei quickly lept out of the vehicle to escape. Takashi followed after her, but before any more could follow another bus crashed between them and caught on fire. Saeko rushed out to call out through the flames to see if Takashi survived. He was alright and they all agreed to meet at the Eastern Police station in one day.

Saeko and Rei are often seen as second in command as well as Takashi’s main commandos in battle. She clearly likes Takashi and often competes with Rei over him, although it is noted that Seako never views it as competition and views Rei as more of a partner then a rival though Rei feels otherwise.

Weapons: Saeko Busujima katana the Murata-touHer original weapon was a bokken used for bashing the skulls of Them with her great strength and skill. Later she is given a weapon from Saya father, Souichiro Takagi, a katana called the Murata-tou from ancient Japan. With this blade she now dismembers and maims the undead. She has in the past argued with Kohta over whether guns or swords were better.
