Sailor Moon S

As with my other reviews, so I start this one. I rediscovered Sailormoon 3 years ago, and watched the entire series all the way through. This was one of the series that I watched and it was evident why this was my favorite of the Sailormoon series when I was a child.

Storyline
The story of Sailormoon S comes right on the heels of Sailormoon R. Life is starting to get back to normal for Usagi Tsukino, with Chibiusa having returned back to her home, and the Black Moon Kingdom having finally been vanquished. However, it seems that a new menace is in Tokyo - the Death Busters, who are looking for something called the Holy Grail. With the Holy Grail, they can use it to awaken their Messiah, who will destroy everything. Of course, in Sailormoon, even the flunkies have flunkies, and that shows in the series.

In order to get the Holy Grail, they must extract the pure hearts from random people. The pure hearts should manifest into talismans - a talisman of a scimitar, a mirror and a garnet orb. All three of these combined will create the Holy Grail needed.

Of course, the Death Busters start their reign of terror across Tokyo. Sailormoon is ready to fight, but initially learns that she is not strong enough. After a few powerups and eventually gaining her Super form, as well as the assistance of a few new allies, Sailormoon continues to fight evil where ever it comes.

Characterization
The characters in Sailormoon S, for the most part, have already been established. We already know about the Inner Senshi, but soon we learn more about the new Outer Senshi. These characters are relatively well-developed, if not as well as they could be. Haruka Tenou, as Sailoruranus, is a young woman with traditionally masculine interests, like racing cars and wearing men's clothing. Her girlfriend, Michiru Kaiou, is easily extremely feminine, with a mature femininity unlike the Inner Senshi - she plays violin (a Stradivarius at that) and swims, and has beautiful wavy, green hair and walks gracefully. Setsuna Meiou is much like Michiru, still very graceful and very fashionable, but she possesses a loneliness, much like character Tomoe Hotaru, a young girl with a dark secret. Even the villains, for the most part, tend to be somewhat well developed, even though it's only one or two villains that are developed, yet still remain slightly two dimensional.

Music
The music of this series is very well done. It has more of a 90's dance sound to it, though maintans the jazz/blues/classical influence that is apparent throughout the series. Western audiences are able to finally hear the original soundtrack now, and what a perfect season for this to be done to.

Animation
The animation, with each Sailormoon series, improves as the series goes on, with some days being better than others. The Animation is in the middle - not as strong as Sailormoon SuperS and Stars, but stronger than BSSM and SMR. The covers for the series is accurate to some episodes in the series, particularly the later seasons, though animation this beautiful is still comparatively rare. There are moments where the animation tends to be fudged, and of course, the stock footage gets old, but that's part of the charm with the series.

Overall, Sailormoon S deserves the love that it gets, even if for the Storyline and characters only. This is the darkest season of the Sailormoon Animation, and rightfully so - this season is largely about death and rebirth, and has a lot of religious symbolism.
