Slam dunk is the tale of delinquent Hanamichi Sakuragi meeting the girl of his dreams and trying to win her heart by joining the school basketball team she loves. Not knowing her brother is the Captain of said team creates problems along with hating his team-mate Rukawa who is the object of his crush's desire despite Rukawara not knowing nor caring. At least that's how it starts, Sakuragi soon learns to love the game and through hard work and various encounters, he, along with the rest of the team grow into a formidable underdog team.
If you like basketball, you should watch this anime, it's by far the best basketball anime and I'd class it as one of the best anime of all time. I love watching Sakuragi grow as a player and the team develop in the face of the obstacles that get thrown in front of them. The tips given to him are all valid, pay enough attention to the right parts and it can improve your game too. Get the manga and you'll see that some key frames are lifted straight out of photo's from NBA professionals. The animation was fine for its time and still has some scenes where the attention to detail is superb on character's form and techniques. The rest of the team get across how much basketball means to them throughout the series and you'll want to play ball after watching it too.
Slam dunk is a beautifully balanced mixture of realism and sheer comic absurdity. The comical moments usually revolve around Sakuragi and his gang of former thugs who hang around as cheerleaders and part-time helpers. They can bring light to any situation and are even mid game you'll get comical moments from Rukara, "Gori" and Sakuragi that could have easily been horribly out place but instead just add to show.
Slam dunk long series but come the end, you'll want more but in a way be glad as topping the end would be tough. It even surpasses the original manga in the ending. Slam dunk is the yard stick all basketball anime are measured against and so far all have failed to reach it's legendary awesomeness.

I'll start off with the good points of this anime. I enjoyed the animation and voices of the characters. Also It has a decent storyline.
The story is kinda like this. A delinquent, who just started high school, starts to play basketball to impress a girl he likes. He is super athletic and starts off with horrible shooting and defense skills. But he can jump really high, run really fast and almost dunk. There is another player on the team that is also a freshman. This guy on the other hand is awesome at everything that has to do with basketball. He has great defense and scoring ability. The girl, the delinquent is after, really likes the freshman whose really good at basketball. Thus the rivalry is born and they compete with each other while trying to win as many games as possible in order to go to Japans best basketball tournament or something like that. The deslinquent learns skills along the way and has the potential of being better the freshman who is really good. This potential is never realized through the 100+ episdoes because it takes 10+ episodes to complete 1 basketball game. Then another 10 episodes of everyone being as dumb as they possibly can inbetween games. The animators were completely retarded when making this anime. They could have easily finished the entire anime in 50 episodes or so.
That all being said it really isn't even about basketball. The reason the basketball games take so long is that the main character, the delinquent, takes up most of the games with his insane brand of humor. Here is how the games go. The game moves along, the main character does something amazing dumb, like slam dunking the ball on someones head. Everyone laughs at the moron for a good 3 minutes. He then does something even dumber, like is going to start a fight. Then finally the team gets in a pinch because he's a moron and he finally does something amazing to win the game. Now that you have read this description of each game you do not even need to watch any other game.
Then there is the characters. There couldn't have been a more retarded character then main character, the delinquent. I won't even go to the slam dunk description page to learn his name he is sooo god damn retarded. He is obnoxious, obtuse, and completely insane. While I do give him props at being an amazingly quick learner at basketball he still sucks at it. In fact, he only even started to become good at it in the very end. He's kind of like that guy in your group of friends that everyone hates but is still in your group of friends. The studio that made this anime was banking on the idea that the main character would be hallarious. He does have his moments, but he just comes off as obnoxious. I do not even want to hear his voice ever again.
Then there is the freshman who is good at basketball. That is all there is to him. He's really really really good at basketball.
There is the girl that the main character likes........ Theres nothing to say about her other then the main character likes her and she likes the other guy.
To give this show some props I did watch most of the episodes, at around episode 30 or so, i started just skipping around. Then I started to skip entire episodes and realize I missed nothing. I watched it to the end hoping to god that the main character would grow up or something like that would happen, except the end never happened. What makes this soo depressing is that this anime had soooooooo much potential and it ended up as trash because the studio that made it tried to milk it for all it had before it got canceled. To add one last remark, this anime, when all was said and done, made me regret ever watching even an episode of this.
