Hikari Hanazono has always been second to Kei Takishima. When they were six years old, their pro-wrestling loving fathers introduced them to each other. Assuming that she was the best in wrestling, young Hikari challenged Kei to a wrestling match only to be thoroughly defeated by him. Ever since that fateful incident, Hikari swore to beat Kei in school grades, sporting events or any competition. To do this, she has enrolled in the same school as Kei since elementary. Now she attends Hakusenkan, an ultra elite school, that costs her carpenter father a lot of money. Hikari and Kei are the top two students in the school, with Kei holding firmly to that number one position. While Hikari considers Kei to be a rival and important friend, she is completely unaware that Kei loves her. The story primarily focuses on Hikari and her constant attempts to defeat her one and only rival, Kei, and how she finds love in their rivalry.

The storyline in Special A is very consistent. It keeps true from start to finish without any flaws. I really enjoyed seeing how each scenario would play out. I also really enjoyed getting the side stories thrown in about the other characters. While watching this anime, I really worried for my ability to breathe. I laughed so much, some parts were just too funny.

The music in the anime was all suitable. I liked how they did over-dramatics with their music, which just made things funnier again. Nothing too dragged out, nothing understated. I found the music to be playful when needed, suspenseful at times, energetic to go along with Hikari's determination.

Characters were brilliant. I love them all so much.
- Hikari is amazing. She's kind, funny, helpful, determined, and well, let's face it. She can be rather slow. Despite all of her talent, she lacks in seeing what's right in front of her sometimes.

- That's where her rival, Kei, comes in. He's a bit more disciplined to the eye, but deep down, he's so much more. Kind, caring, and tends to worry for Hikari's well-being easily. But, just watch the anime, it's not hard to see why.

- Akira is wonderful. She's so funny. I love her affection towards Hikari and her genuine love for tea time. Each time she served something, I just wanted to taste it or be there with them to enjoy it all.

- Tadashi seemed like bit of a klutz (not the best word choice, but it'll do). He's funny and upbeat, and adores food. Getting to see his sensitive side was fantastic too. I really enjoyed his character.

- Ryuu is our animal lover. I didn't quite understand the extreme of this until a bit further into the anime. So adorable. x3

- Jun. He surprised me. I thought he'd be really quiet and just stick around Ryuu and Megumi for the series, but no. His secret side took me off guard. Who doesn't love a twist in a series?

- Megumi. She's really sweet. She doesn't say much (ha ha) but her intentions are pure. I didn't think much of her until later in the series. She really grew on me since.

Finally Yahiro. The whole time with him I was thinking "What's your problem? Go away!" but that's so far from the case now. I'll say no more, people will have to watch and find out about him.

And now, the animation. Everything was on par with my expectations for anime. I liked how they did something a little different by changing the look, textures and so fourth when there was a moment of realization or affection. And they pulled off different feelings and reactions well too. Just the right use of over dramatics. Haha.

Either way, my final conclusion is that if you're looking for a laugh with some swoon worthy moments, you should absolutely check out Special A.

Have to say, this anime was worth watching. At first I wasn't sure but it got interesting as each episode passed by. All the characters were lively and well planned. Loved the storyline and the plot. If you love host club or anime with a strong female lead, you will definitely love this.

Special A is a really cute, funny, and romantic anime. It is one of the best school-based anime ever created. The characters really lived up to what the viewers expect from a Special class. They are all smart, and charming.
