Luckily, timid Yoko was a bit prepared for her journey into her true home - the 12 kingdoms.
First, her guardian Keiki had put a water spirit into her so that it would use her body to fight for her since she didn't know how to. And second, Yoko, who was originally from one of the twelve kingdoms, was able to effortlessly speak and understand the language. Yoko even changes to her true form when she reaches the twelve kingdoms - her hair turns into a much more vivid shade of red, her skin turns darker, and her dark eyes turn bright green.

Even though Yoko was able to defend herself with the water spirit within her, she felt uneasy being separated from Keiki in a strange new world. Asano felt the same, but Yuka on the other hand, was thrilled at the prospect of some adventure.

Later on in the story, the trio is separated. Yuka even turns into Yoko's enemy, blaming her for her own misery and desiring to destroy her. Yoko later finds out that she is destined to be the empress of the kingdom of Kei, and discovers that Keiki is a kirin, a mythical animal (resembling a unicorn), which chooses the emperors and empresses of the twelve kingdoms and stays by their side, and that he has been captured by a fake empress who has conquered Kei.

We will join Yoko as she first fights for survival, the throne, Keiki, her kingdom, and with her own inner demons as she journeys through the 12 kingdoms, finding friends, making enemies, and growing ever more queenly with every new adventure in her strange homeland.
