Ura

[Edit]
Overview
URA! is a gallery and project space in Istanbul, Turkey. It was founded by artist Mihda Koray, a native of Istanbul who studied at The Slade School of Fine Art in London, and is located on the first floor of the Misir Apartmani on Istiklal Avenue (Turkish: Istiklal Caddesi) in the Beyoğlu district of the city. URA! distinguishes itself as a gallery by drawing no distinction between visual artists, musicians, and writers.

URA! opened in April 2007 with the intention of merging music, club culture and contemporary art within the same space, something that was very new in the Istanbul art scene.

The first exhibition in April 2007 included work by Christian Egger, Adham Faramawy, Melissa Frost and Mihda Koray. The following exhibition, which ran as a parallel event during 10th Istanbul Biennial, featured the Slayer Pavilion and an additional curated music event headlined by the band Blurt, as well as reuniting the artists from the opening exhibition. URA! has also shown London-based film maker Bronwen Parker-Rhodes in conjunction with acclaimed London-based performance artist Theo Adams.

In September 2007, URA! launched its own newspaper, or zine. The first edition included contributions by Ana da Silva of The Raincoats, Andrew Mania, Princess Julia, Adham Faramawy, Mark Aerial Waller, Max Sixteen, Thomas Hein, Ryan Styles, Slayer Pavilion, Theo Adams, Russell Dean Stone, Melissa Frost and Ulay Laysiepen, among others.

URA! has announced its intention to branch into Internet radio, broadcasting its bands and its artists' sound art.
