The whole story is a rather sad one, where many people die or become wounded as the story goes on. There is never really much piece in the show as one battle after another happens. The characters seem to get to their braking point as each story gets more extreme and the sacrifices become greater. Both English and Japanese versions are beautifully done, the voices picked are rather perfect for the characters personalities. I came to fall in love with all of them as I watched each story ark. They really were all loveable characters, showing many of there strengths and some of there weaknesses. Some of the episodes did have a playfulness about them, braking up the sad parts in the show. It was mostly the children that really would bring people back to the present and not looking to what happen before or what was to come. With that said, this was no way a comedy. It was extremely graphic and bloody. The camera angles were rather good, braking the story up and giving it a rather nice film school approach, much like how we would shoot a actual movie. In fact, this could probably be put together as such. I feel this is one that everyone would like to see at some point if they like a show about war. It was one of the few that made me cry at the end.
It first started as a Visual Novel which was released in 2002 and across the semi-monthly chart of top 50 best-selling bishōjo games sold nationally in Japan, the PC version of Utawarerumono ranked 1st in the last two weeks of the April 2004.
I also recommend this anime to those who like a unique storyline. It features a guy named Hakuoro who has an irremovable mask. He also lost his memories and was found near a forest by Eruruw and her sister Aruruw. Through his charisma, he was able to rally the people when needed. But also he was starting to discover his hidden past.
