Critiquing the Anime: Yu Yu Hakusho

I don't know why, but this is one of my favorites. It has to be the nostalgia of me as a child and coming home after school to specifically watch this anime before I knew it was anime thanks to Toonami.

My only complaint is the voice for the Kuwabara. Dubbed and Subbed, it annoys me. However, I love Genkai.

And the villans are very memorable.

I agree that having the main character die in the first episode is a fun convention!

My favorites would have to be Kurama and Hiei.

In true Rurouni Kenshin style, the main character can kick anyone's butt ... except his girlfriend.

Not so many bad boys are kind hearted. There phrase said bad people won’t die soon. Yusuke Urameshi sure not as he looks like other disobedient high school boys, his kind hear move him to save unknown child, unfortunately he lost his life. Koenma, the ruler of afterlife underworld was touched, he gave Yusuke chance of life with condition he also have job as underworld detective. Who knows, Yusuke have hidden spirit aura, he manage to beat-down his enemies. With help from his best friend (?) After Yusuke officially accepted as Genkai’s successor, the group formed. Then, they joint Dark Tournament to beat Toguro and thwart his evil plan to open large Demon Plane, so they can unite demon world and human world. In the end, the successfully defeated Toguro. But their plan still continues with other person, Sensui. Sensui was former underworld detective, but after he watched 1000 hours human crime, his kind-heart turned to ambition to destroy human race. Yusuke cs tried to stop him. As he defeat Sensui in demon world, Yusuke felt something inside himself changed, became more powerful. The truth revealed, our hero is actually son of one of great demon leader in demon world, which mean there demon’s blood in Yusuke’s vein. Long conversation and big matched between son and father, Yusuke choose to life as normal person with Keiko in human world.

Seem to be short, but actually this anime full of fascinating scene, moreover battle scene looks so cool! Some romantic side, touching side, farewell, and humorous! I give 4,5 from 5 for overall this anime series!

Yu Yu Hakusho is one of those rare anime whose whole is more than the sum of its parts.

Yes, you've got typical shounen fighting going on, but you also have EXCELLENT characterization (especially, as one of the other reviews said, the villains) and wonderful character interaction and relationships (and also some relatively subtle yaoi, if you like that). Characterization is Togashi's strength (you can also see this in Hunter x Hunter, his other series).

The animation is a bit rusty, but that's because it was made in the early 1990's.

I cannot put my love of this anime into words. Everything is just epic.

High plot, Low plot.

Where to start? This show does it all: fighting, pummeling, blasting, disemboweling, and even soul sucking. But make no mistake: this is no Dragon Ball, there are plenty of fights (and single elimination tournaments...) but the narrative itself is far more purposeful and mature than anything you would see from muscle heads showing off their latest fighting techniques.

Storyline: Even though this show has the typical high school setting that is so familiar to anime, it's definitely on the mature end of that genre. Blood and gore notwithstanding, the question of responsibility with strength hits early and hard. Also laid into are the family issues of the various characters and how they deal with them. The world itself is the real centerpiece of the plot line, however: a dark and dangerous place, from growing up on the streets to saving the world, where everything is a struggle for survival. Yu Yu Hakusho may not be the deepest psychological meditation on coping and life in general, but it does remarkable things for what it is.

Music: Since the show is 112 episodes and the music stays essentially the same, there is a high probability that it will grow stale to your ears after a while, but honestly I don't recall noticing the music all that much. It just wasn't a very important part of the show, and I would even go so far as to say that the horror aspect of the show was more effectively complimented by silence: "Better to hear the bones crunch my dear..."

Characters: The villains are what really shine in this show. With the exception of Kurama and Hiei (former villains themselves) the most nuanced and interesting minds and histories come exclusively from the evil doers. You could almost consider Yusuke and Kuwabara's relative simplicity as an excuse to show the viewer that it takes more than just a hard upbringing to make a true killer: it takes something special. But it isnt all darkness and depravity, not even by half; the harebrained antics of our heroes are always good for a laugh, and I could write a book on the deep bonds of friendship that we see form over the course of the show, and you wont want for romance either, even if it takes a backseat to the fighting more often than not. Overall, you get absolutely everything you could want from a good anime.

Animation: The animation in this show is truly distinctive. Combining a series of fighting anime attacks and movements with what I would call a "dark slice of life" aesthetic, this show is really something special. The emphasis on darker, less flamboyant colors make the whole world of Yu Yu Hakusho a dark and scary place, where Yusuke and company are always on the edge of danger. This darkness also helps to make the humor and times of rest all the more sweet.

2nd best anime beside DragonballZ

Where can I start YYH take place around the time Dragonballz can't remember which sage tho.

A kid who is a bully who doesn't like school, but like to beat up on people even his closest friend for the fun of it, unt;lone day he died by saving a kid from a hit & run accident.

End up being a protector of the Spirit world but also the real world in the process, and from that he meet alot of demon, human which has powers that he never knew of, and learn how it all started. Alot of actions in it, nice characters, but it was too short.

But don't take my word on it, take a look at the show, hope you have a good time .

Changing for the better

I grew up watching Yu Yu Hakusho, but in my home country it was called Ghost Fighter.

Beginning at the age of 14, Yusuke was pre-given the task to be a spirit detective. His destiny was already written down by the son of the King of the spirit world, Koenma. But an unforseen event changes all, he dies before the written date! No one ever imagined that Yusuke would die saving a boy from being road kill when he's usually beating up someone and disrespecting his elders. The little twist in this ever so slightly simple story is that he's given the chance to save himself from dying. The whole story revolves around his journey to save the humans who know nothing about the other worlds. In his multiple accomplishments, he improves both his attitude, personality and life. He begins to grow along side his friends Kuwabara, Kurama and Hiei. His new life includes many of his new found friends that preceeds in the spirit world or who aren't humans nor spirits, like Jin. He's put through many tests in which his loyalty, strength, and heart is tested -each one he conquers with the help of his loved ones. A grade A anime.

This is a pretty vague review but their my thoughts of the story, i grew up with the characters and hopefully you might want to see them grow as well. It's your decision and my review should only help you get a bit of information about the story, not a detailed synopsis.
