It is nice to finally be able to finish this series as when I originally started watching it was back in 2008 or so.

It is nice to finally be able to finish this series as when I originally started watching it was back in 2008 or so.

I regard television shows such as Natsume-Yujin-chou in higher regard than most because even though it has some fantastical things going on (in this case a boy has the ability to see and help youkai), it still maintains a level of reality. In this instance, this anime depicts life in Japan more or less how it is seen and lived by every day people here.

The animators really took care to depict the scenery (both wild and city) of Japan much as it currently is and I really appreciate the small details to things like that.

The story on its own may not be remarkable to some as it doesn't involve massive battles with fantastic swordplay and magical abilities, but I do think it gives some insight into Shintoism here in Japan, a religion based predominantly on the belief that all things have a spirit that dwells within (like a boulder, for instance). The story is also simple, yet elegant. The show revolves mainly around Natsume, a boy long misunderstood for his ability to see these spirits and lesser gods around him that most of Japan by this point has long forgotten. The show is actually more about Natsume finding his way in the world as a person with a special ability more than it is about the youkai he encounters.

Still, it is a nice, simple tale with a lot of interesting scenery and very interesting textures going on.. and in many ways, reminds me of the show Mushishi.

An Authentic, Enjoyable, Heartfelt Show

This show has a deep-rooted foundation in traditional Japanese lore. The story of a boy with an unusual gift, left to clean up the fractured relationships from his mother's life.

There is no fanservice, no severe violence, it's all just an enjoyable collection of tales. The emotional journey feels sincere; and the adventures are all unique and interesting. Highly recommended.

Gentle, relaxing, feel-good anime

If the only good fallout from the Ishihara controversy regarding anime, is that some of them end up relying less on sex, T&A and moe, and more on interesting and realistic stories about people... then I welcome anime like Natsume Yuujin-chou.

The thing that stands out for me more in NYC, is watching the decisions that Takashi makes... trying to see the good in youkai without being clouded by ...

The thing that stands out for me more in NYC, is watching the decisions that Takashi makes... trying to see the good in youkai without being clouded by selfishness or self-preservation, even when they're up to no good. This is played up to pretty boring extremes in many other past anime protagonists... but in NYC they seem quite natural. You get the idea that Takashi stands as the healthy, well-balanced teen he is, on the solid ground of the decisions he makes.

Some of the EPs' stories were more heartfelt than others, and there are still moe elements (like Nyanko's very marketable cuteness), and I have to admit the 1st season is my favorite. But later seasons delve into the relationships with humans a lot more, and the progression feels very natural, not forced. A storyline about the extreme nature of being able to see and interact (and free) youkai, with relationships forming very non-extremely. You don't get to four seasons without having some appeal to Japanese viewers... they obviously feel something too. I join them in praising this anime.

Plus: good storytelling, realistic interactions between characters

Minus: Somewhat average art, sometimes too much screen time for the cat

Conclusion: Storytelling trumps gorgeous (and time-consuming) artwork again.

Touching with a Nice pace

If you are tired of anime being all about action and having no character then watch Natsume Yujin-cho. It has a very calm, relaxing pace without being boring and most of the stories are so touching its hard not to cry. A very very lovely series with memorable characters and heartfelt messages.

A great anime to just sit, relax and watch.

This anime is a nice series that combines Japanese folk legends and culture with adventure. The most enjoyable element is how you can watch the show without it causing you to want to pull your hair out because of annoying characters, all of which have depth, personality and story to them. The most enjoyable element is how you can watch the show without it causing you to want to pull your hair out because of annoying characters, all of which have depth, personality and story to them. I particularly enjoyed the comedy through out the episode which really helps to lighten your mood after serious story lines, I like anime's to leave me with a sense of excitement which this anime does. Another strong point of this anime is it doesn't exaggerate on emotions (fan girls, lots of squealing etc.) as a lot of other shojo anime's do, so therefore I recommend this show to older audiences. The only down point is some of the episodes are unnecessarily slow to get to the point.
Overall this anime is well worth your time to watch, so what are you waiting for?

A Definite Must Watch for Anybody

Natsume Yujin-Cho, Roughly translated to Natsume's Book of friends, follows the journey of the a boy following in his grandmothers steps as one of the incredibly few humans who can see "Youkai" otherwise known as traditional Japanese monsters. Like his grandmother he comes across as slightly off to everyone else around him, like someone suffering from severe mental illness like Schizophrenia. Because of it he was shuffled around a lot as a child and grew very lonely. The story is almost about him finding sanctuary with a loving family and finding purpose for his gift, with his new friends, and Madara, or as everyone else calls him Nyanko-Sensei the seemingly endlessly powerful Youkai who chooses to follow him around as a fat looking cat who has become one of my favorite characters in an anime.

If you have seen an anime like Mushishi: ( www.crunchyroll.com/library/mushishi ) You will know that this traditional kind of setting is not only rich with originality and culture but in this case gives off more of a Ghibli "Spirited Away" Kind of vibe which is refreshing and addictive.

Everything about this series is charming, and the animation budget just seemingly increases as the series goes on. A rich blend of emotion in every episode always leaves you feeling something at the end of every episode. There's not one that is empty and not one character that's introduced that you do not grow to love.

Definitely recommend watching this one, Sit down with a nice cup of tea and let the dream like world sweep you away for a while.

Final verdict:
If you are looking for an anime with amazing memorable characters and a beautiful way of storytelling give this one chance.

Perfect Pacing - Calm Series

This is a great series to watch if you want to get away from the fast pace that most shows seem to have now. Don't get me wrong, in no way is this series slow to develop. However, it's a very calming series with many touching moments. Worth the watch if you're looking for something to watch when you want to relax.

Forever the Favorite

I have watched animes time and time again yet have never come across one such as this. This series strokes the on the hearts strings and is by far on a completely different level than any other anime.

A beautiful and touching anime

On one hand, this is a blend of horror and adventure as Natsume Takashi deals with the spirits and monsters only he can see.

At its heart, though, this is the story about a lost boy learning to find his place in the world.

Natsume Yujin-cho has to be one of the best shounen animes out there. The artwork is very well done and unique. It has it's own style that you won't find in too many animes. Natsume Yujin-cho has to be one of the best shounen animes out there. The artwork is very well done and unique. It has it's own style that you won't find in too many animes. The art sometimes reminds you of ancient Japanese art. There are a variety of character designs that you won't find in any other anime. The characters are also well done. They all have their own distinct personalities. The different relationships Natsume has with both the youkai and humans are interesting and heart-warming. Natsume is a wonderful male lead for an anime. He can be a bit of a pushover but his sweetness is definitely one of the things that make people fall in love with him. You can't forget the awesome Nyanko-sensei. He adds a lot of humor to the anime and is very entertaining. The other characters Natsume associates with add to the wonderfulness that is Natsume Yujin-cho. The background stories for the different characters and the settings are dazzling and amazing. There tends to be a lot of romance going on but not with Natsume exactly. There's also action and magic fights that are astonishing to watch. Natsumi Yujin-cho is definitely a good anime. I recommend all fellow anime lovers to give a good. I can nearly guarantee that this anime will touch your soul and worm its way into your heart.
