The Boogiepop horror series, written by Kouhei Kadono and illustrated by Kouji Ogata, weren't the first light novels. Kaoru Kurimoto's Guin Saga and The Vampire Hunter D series by Hideyuki Kikuchi were more influential in establishing the form. But, the million-copy selling Boogiepop gets plenty of credit for igniting the modern light novel trend. Seven Seas released the series in print in 2006, and have now brought it back in a digital edition.

Back in May of 2017, animation studio Gainax Fukushima and the tourism board of the port town of Onahama in Inaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan teamed up to produce a promotional anime entitled Jinriki Senkan!? Shiokaze Sawakaze ("Human-powered Battleship!? Shiokaze Sawakaze").
