FUNimation has announced that 009 Re: Cyborg is set to be released in a Blu-ray combo pack on July 28th, and that a first run limited edition will feature a bonus 44 page interview and data booklet featuring a discussion with the Cyborg 009 update's director, Kenji Kamiyama. Ishimori Production today announced that a new anime adaptation of Shotaro Ishimori/Ishinomori's representative work Cyborg 009 is in the works as the series' 50th anniversary project. Hit the jump for more details.
The comic industry's Harvey Awards have announced their final nominee ballot. Named for Mad Magazine's legendary Harvey Kurtzman, the awards are distinguished by Comic-Book creators. Kodansha's release of Attack on Titan competes with Drawn and Quarterly's release of Shigeru Mizuki's Showa: A History of Japan, and Viz's release of Taiyo Matsumoto's Sunny compete with two European comics for Best American Edition of Foreign Material. Veteran anime voice actress Kikuko Inoue posted photos and videos about her visit to Ishinomaki Mangattan Museum in Miyagi Prefecture. Japanese music label Space Shower Music has posted a music video for Lyu:Lyu single "Seeds" set to the American remake of classic Shotaro Ishinomori manga Cyborg 009, written by F.J. Maybe as the convention season starts to heart up, we might hear something about a North American license for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex director Kenji Kamiyama's sci-fi revival 009: Re Cyborg, but in the meantime, the anime movie is scheduled to be released with English subtitles in Japan on May 22nd. The Shotaro Ishinomori Mangattan Museum, honoring the work of the pioneering manga/anime/tokusatsu creator, was built with corporation of national government and Ishimaki City in 2001 and became a tourist destination, attracting 180,000 visitors annually. During the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, many of the building around the museum were destroyed and its facilities were substantially damaged. In 2008, Shotaro Ishinomori was posthumously awarded him the Guinness World Record for most comics/manga published by one author for a body of work over 128,000 pages, which included the creation of seminal superpowered team Cyborg 009. His towering influence also helped define the tokusatsu live action genre. November 17th, the museum in his honor will be holding a reopening ceremony. More after the jump.
