In 2008, Shotaro Ishinomori was posthumously awarded him the Guinness World Record for most comics/manga published by one author for a body of work over 128,000 pages, which included the creation of seminal superpowered team Cyborg 009. "Nengajo" is Japanese New Year's Card. "Yahoo! Japan Nengajo", a web service run by HAKUHODO i-studio and Yahoo! Japan, has started selling "Charity Nengajo" featuring Japanese celebrities and popular anime characters, including Evangelion and Cyborg 009. A part of the profit will be donated to the disaster areas of the 3.11 Great East Japan Earthquake via Japan Red Cross in March 2012. Check the designs after the jump.
Kenji Kamiyama has revealed updated designs for his Cyborg 009 revival, 009 Re:Cyborg. Originally created by Shotaro Ishinomori in 1964, the ethnic caricatures of the international team of fugitive cyborgs didn't age too gracefully, so the idea of updating the crew for the 21st century has been the cause for some curiosity. Production I.G announces the production of a new animated feature film, 009 RE:CYBORG, based on the Cyborg 009 characters created by Shotaro Ishinomori and directed by Kenji Kamiyama, the world-acclaimed director of the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series and Eden of the East. The full-CG, stereoscopic 3D movie will be theatrically distributed in Japan in fall 2012 by Production I.G and T-Joy. Kenji Kamiyama himself is writing the script for the new film, which is going to be set in the present days. The main staff gathered around the project includes some of Japan’s top creators who have already collaborated with Kamiyama in his previous works. Gato Aso (Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit) is in charge of character design duties, the score will be composed by Kenji Kawai (Eden of the East), while the background art will be by Yusuke Takeda (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit). The animation is produced in collaboration with Sanzigen, one of Japan's up-and-coming CG studios.
