Universal Pictures has officially lined up a release date for Pacific Rim 2, which recently added John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Attack the Block) as its star. With Steven S. Entertainment journal Variety has reported that Derek Connolly (Jurassic World, Kong: Skull Island, Safety Not Guaranteed) has been hired to write the latest version of a script for a Pacific Rim sequel, set to be directed by Steven S. DeKnight (showrunner on the Netflix Daredevil series). Jon Spaihts penned a previous draft.
The on-again, halted-again, on-again, delayed-again Pacific Rim sequel is back on the march. While mecha-vs-kaiju mastermind Guillermo del Toro remains a producer, having his hands full with Fantastic Voyage and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, he's given over the director's chair to Steven S. DeKnight, creator of the Starz Spartacus TV series and later showrunner of the Netflix adaptation of Marvel's Daredevil.

With Hollywood Reporter claiming that production of the Pacific Rim sequel has been delayed indefinitely, Entertainment Weekly spoke to director Guillermo Del Toro. While GDT does admit that there is a delay and that he "may do another movie in the middle," he insists that Pacific Rim: Maelstrom is still happening.
