Greater Tokyo's Kawasaki hosts one of Japan's largest Halloween parades, with thousands of holiday cosplayers marching down the streets. This year they doubled down with a second Halloween parade just for Star Wars fans, featuring more costumes, bands and even floats modeled after traditional Japanese nebuta. A big part of Star Wars' meta-mythology concerns how the movies drew heavily from Japanese samurai cinema. Elements, particularly C-3P0 and R2D2 were, in part, inspired by Akira Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress. The word "Jedi" is thought to be derived from the period drama term "jidaigeki." And, Darth Vader's look is said to be inspired by samurai armor, Date Masamune's specifically. Bandai paid tribute to this in a series of figures, now headed to North America.
Riding the wave of excitement around The Force Awakens, Japan's All Nippon Airways introduced a Star Wars collaboration earlier this year. At the time, this included fall 2015 plans for a 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft outfit in the motif of an "always reliable and loved by all" droid and dubbed the ”R2-D2 Jet.” Announced this week, R2 will be joined by the new BB-8 on a Boeing 767-300 and a Boeing 777-300ER.

As Star Wars prepares to return to theaters, a couple of Japanese figures markers have begun offering alternative takes on its iconic characters. Bandai is releasing their MOVIE REALIZATION Samuraidaishou Darth Vader and Stormtrooper, Good Smile Company is releasing their Nendoroids, and Square Enix is releasing a very mech Variant Play Arts Kai Darth Vader in May, followed by Stormtrooper and Boba Fett figures, now available for pre-order ahead of July releases.
