New Titles: Squid Girl, You and Me, and Sekai'Ichi Hatsukoi

Written by Patrick Macias

Polluters, beware: SHE’S BAAAACKKK! Nothing can prepare you for the side-splitting insanity of Squid Girl Season 2, except of course for the events that transpired during the first season of Squid Girl.

To give you some background, this 12-episode anime series from 2010, based on the manga by Masahiro Anbe, won over viewers with a wry ecologically-minded story about an invader from the bottom of the sea who plots to punish the human race for polluting the sea. The catch is this fearsome vengeance-seeking creature takes the form of a cute little girl with ten (count ‘em) tentacles and a propensity for spitting ink just like an actual squid does!

As you might expect, Squid Girl’s invasion of the surface world does not exactly go as planned. After busting a hole in the wall of a beach house that belongs to a pair of sisters, our heroine must work off the damage bill by taking a job as a waitress. And thus does chaos and comedy ensue in equal measure.

Since Squid Girl’s debut in 2010, the character has become a much-loved cult sensation in Japan and around the globe with anime fans everywhere. Squid Girl Season 2 is sure to continue the fun with more ill-timed spurts of ink and pint-sized plans to wipe out all of humanity.

Meanwhile, Kimi to Boku (Japanese for “You and Me”) is at the other end of the entertainment spectrum. A slice-of-life show, the sort of which Japan is excelling at these days, Kimi to Boku examines the trials and tribulations of a circle of friends at a Japanese high school in a manner that’s sure to appeal to anyone who has done their fair share of growing up, living, laughing, loving, etc.

The story focuses on a tight-knit group of guys – twins Yuta and Yuki, along with Kaname and Shun – who have all been pals since kindergarten. But the addition of a half-Japanese transfer student at named Chizuru changes the chemistry and plenty of drama and subtle humor soon results.

The series is based on a manga by Kiichi Hotta that debuted in 2004. The Kimi to Boku comic is still running to this day and has been collected in a total of nine volumes. Meanwhile, the anime version has just debuted in Japan earlier this October under the supervision of J.C. Staff; a name that fans can associate with such classics as Revolutionary Girl Utena, His and Her Circumstances, and Honey and Clover. Following their example, Kimi to Boku is sure to also graduate into anime history, and into your heart, with top honors.

While Kimi to Boku is the new kid on the Fall anime season block, Season 2 of Sekai-Ichi Hatsukoi is a returning favorite. Based on the manga series by Shungiku Nakamura, of Junjo Romantica: Pure Romance fame, Seikai-Ichi Hatsukoi (also known as “The World’s Greatest First Love”) falls into the uniquely Japanese “boy’s love” genre, but is also sure to be of interest to anyone who is interested in a behind-the-scenes look into the manga publishing industry.

Here’s a recap of what went down in Season One: 25 year old literary editor Ritsu Onodera quits his job at his father’s company over accusations that he only got the job because of his dad. He manages to get a new gig at the Marukawa Publishing house, but is assigned to the shojo manga section. Unfortunately, Ritsu is not a fan of girl’s comics and, even worse, gives off a bad first impression to his department’s editor in chief Masamune Takano. It turns out that Ritsu and Masamune have a past together that stretches all the way back to a romantic fling they had during their school days. But his quest to reignite the flames of passion will not be easy.

Can Ritsu and Masamune overcome their troubled past? Will Ritsu ever get the hang of editing girl’s manga? Season Two of Seikai-Ichi Hatsukoi has all the answers!

New Titles: Hunter X Hunter and Chihayafuru

Written by M.Harajima

This season we're bringing you a myriad of different titles from a myriad of genres to appeal to everyone's tastes and sensibilities. After all, variety is the flavor of life!

Let's start with one of the many 'flavors' we're featuring on site this season with: Chihayafuru.

Ayase Chihaya is a sixth grader whose dream is for her older sister to become the top model in Japan. But one day, a transfer student, Wataya Arata, tells her that her dream should be about herself. Arata's dream is to become a famous competitive Karuta player. Chihaya is somewhat shocked when she sees how intense the normally reserved Arata gets about the card game.

Arata is a shy boy that is mocked by his classmates but Chihaya befriends him and sticks up for him even at the expense of her good reputation with her classmates. She visits his home one day and watches him play Karuta with intense passion. His skill and speed is so quick that Chihaya’s only goal was to get at least one card. Four years later, Chihaya enters high school and discovers that Arata, who returned to Fukui, no longer plays Karuta. However, she believes that if she continues to play, they will one day be reunited. Therefore, she is determined to start a Karuta club at her high school.

If you remember how intense Saki played mahjong, you’ll be surprised at the intensity of a game of Karuta. Be sure to check it out on Tuesdays at 10:30am PDT.

If that doesn't suit your tastes, then I'm sure Hunter x Hunter will stir some excitement.

When a great title like this airs and then ends, we - as fans - hunger, nay, demand another healthy serving of it. Now that it's making its triumphant return, the pangs of our hunger are quenched and satiated...for now.

Gon, a young boy who lives on Whale Island, dreams of becoming a Hunter like his father, who left when Gon was still young. Abundant riches, hidden treasures, fearsome monsters, and exotic creatures are scattered around the world... Gon departs on a journey to become a Pro Hunter who risks his life in search of the unknown.

Along the way, he meets other applicants for the Hunter exam: Kurapika, Leorio, and Killua. Passing the Hunter exam is not an easy task but Gon is determined to become a Hunter to understand why his father wanted so bad to be one that he chose it over raising Gon.

Can Gon pass the rigorous challenges of the Hunter exam and become the best Hunter in the world!?

Find out if Gon will become a true Hunter by watching on Saturdays at 8:30pm PDT.

New Titles: Fate/Zero, Wagnaria!! 2 and Majikoi~Oh! Samurai Girls

Written by K.A.Wakamatsu

Oy! What a season’s it’s going to be.

We’ve got your standard new additions and your returning titles. Then, we’ve got this third category of titles that have come back for a second season, but making its first appearance here on Crunchyroll. To all these new shows, we – with open arms – would like to say welcome! So what are we in store for this season?

Let’s kick things off with one of the most highly anticipated series: Fate/Zero!!

Ten years prior to the events of Fate/Stay Night, the War of the Holy Grail is a contest in which seven magi summon seven Heroic Spirits to compete to obtain the power of the “Holy Grail,” which grants a miracle. After three inconclusive wars for the elusive Holy Grail, the Fourth War commences.

Kiritsugu finds himself deeply torn between family and duty – obtaining the Holy Grail. However, his greatest opponent appears in the form of Kirei Kotomine, a priest who cannot find any sense of fulfillment in his life and sets his sights on Kiritsugu as the possible answer to the emptiness he feels.

To catch some prequel action, you need to tune into Crunchyroll every Saturday at 9 am PST to catch it all and find out what leads up to the events in Fate/Stay Night!

Shifting gears, to something more appetizing, per se: Wagnaria!! Season 2.

The family restaurant Wagnaria!! Season 2 stands by itself in Hokkaido. One day Sota Takanashi, who loves all things small, meets tiny little Popura, who offers him a job working part time at the restaurant. Attracted to her petite stature, Sota accepts her offer. To his surprise, the restaurant is filled with eccentric characters. Get ready to dish up some wacky comedy together with Sota and his coworkers!

While the first season captured our hearts and made us laugh uncomfortably with every progressing scene, we made us want more. With this second season here, we can have another proverbial second serving of our favorite family restaurant servers and hostesses!

Wagnaria!! Season 2 and all of its wackiness and energy will air every Saturday at 9 am PST.

Then we move over to something different from the first two titles: Majikoi~Oh! Samurai Girls.
And when we mean, different we mean different. Gone is the more serious, shonen action and the wacky relationships evolving out of a light-hearted atmosphere.

Here, sexual tensions and hormones level the playing fields.

It’s one thing to honor your ancestors and keep old traditions alive, but there IS such a thing as taking it to a ridiculous extreme. In Kawakami City, having a samurai ancestor and enormous ‘fighting spirit’ isn’t just an interesting fact, it’s a huge part of how you end up being ranked on the social totem pole. That, in turn, rolls over into the school curriculum. Fortunately, that’s something the local kids like Yamato Naoe have learned to deal with by forming into small ‘bands,’ (that’s the samurai type, NOT music.)

However, while the delicate sexual balance of Yamato’s group seemed fine when there were three girls and four boys, the sudden addition of two MORE girls starts to send everything spinning out of control! Seven’s a band of samurai and nine is a riot as boys, girls and naked blades all come together in MAJIKOI OH! SAMURAI GIRLS!”

Don’t forget to check out Majikoi~Oh! Samurai Girls every Saturday at 9:30 am PST.

Who said that Saturday morning cartoons was a thing of the past?
It’s just grown up, gone across seas and come back to you to shake up your weekends once more.
Question is: what will rock your weekend the hardest?

Trivia

Did you know that the concept of Pokemon was actually inspired by executive director Satoshi Taijiri-Oniwa's childhood hobby: bug collecting
