I started watching this show with very high expectations. It was my impression that it was one of the greats of the genre, up there with Boys Over Flowers, Coffee Prince and Sungkyunkwan Scandal. I started watching this show with very high expectations. It was my impression that it was one of the greats of the genre, up there with Boys Over Flowers, Coffee Prince and Sungkyunkwan Scandal. I also watched it really, really wanting to like it, but it just couldn't hook me. Whereas with other shows, I can't tear myself away from the screen until I'm done, with this one, I kept on pausing it to do other things. I just couldn't get into it.
The premise is awesome. It's basically a Cinderella story; a poor girl is engaged to a prince through a pledge made by their respective grandfathers. Of course, the arrogant and gorgeous prince is indifferent to her in the beginning, but gradually they forge a relationship.
The characters killed it, for me. Chae-Kyung, the heroine, had a lot of qualities that I like in a heroine; she was messy, impulsive, funny, and she didn't take herself too seriously. Unfortunately, I found her way too flaky to enjoy. She was a really frustrating character to watch. Also, the idea was that an ordinary girl with an optimistic temperament and a good heart would be perfect for the lonely, isolated prince. I get tired with that theme. As much as I enjoy imperfect heroines, I like a heroine who is extraordinary in some way. Chae-Kyung was incredibly ordinary.
I also couldn't get into the prince; he was an incredible jerk through at least the first half of the show, and I was really unsatisfied with how his relationship with Chae-Kyung progressed. In other shows, for instance Boys Before Flowers, the hero might be a jerk to the heroine, but he's also extremely fixated on her. In this show on the other hand, the prince just never seemed that interested in Chae-Kyung. Even when he started showing feelings, they lacked the build-up and intensity that you see in other (in my opinion, better) shows.
I was actually glad that the show was 24 episodes instead of say 20. I don't mind when a show drags a little, if I'm into it. I can't exactly complain about the plot either; there was some intrigue and tension, even if I thought the "bad guys" were kind of lukewarm. I would say that this show had everything I normally like, it just wasn't executed all that well. I was so bored with it, pretty much from start to finish, that throughout the watching I was thinking about quitting and starting something else.
