That disco ball is definitely what restrained his powers in his younger years. They show a scene earlier on in the series where it was thrown in the water, which is also why you always see him looking through rocks in the water.

Tristan-Laine, the "disco ball" as you put it was clearly the only thing restraining his dark stone power. Without it he probably would have gone on a rampage much sooner than he did and wound up as one of Kenmi's lab rats.
