    Another anime that bastardizes history
And apparently I tend to really like those kind of animes.

This show combines historic era anime (specifically the late Tokugawa to Bakumatsu Era) with a rock music anime. A kind of mash up I would have never thought should ever exist, much less expect it to be good. But I was pleasantly surprised after seeing the first episode. I was laughing, wondering what the hell I was watching and why ...

The Musical Anime! The music makes it worth watching
If nothing else, watch this anime for the music. I just can't get enough of the music, it's beautiful especially the non-rock version that Okita & Hijikata sings. Even though I don't like rock, I thing that the rock the 3 main protagonists sing are great too. Though I'll need to complain that the illustrator made Okita & Hijikata too buff (maybe it's just the effect of their clothes?) & Sakamoto ...

rock out with your historical fiction out
Bakumatsu Rock's not the kind of series you really want to go to for deep political commentary or really as even a marginally accurate historical fiction piece. We're talking 1860's Japan with electric guitars, stand mics, drum kits, giant flatscreens, color gels for electric stage lighting, and... pizza?

On top of that, it's pretty ridiculous, and that's exactly its charm. This is not a ...

    A Definite 'Maybe' Series
Bakumatsu Rock is one of those series that, when you watch, you will likely be distracted and possibly even amused, if you're the target audience. I'm just not sure who that is supposed to be. There's a huge amount of fanservice, of course, and also some music, which tends to be kind of uneven; some of it's quite listenable, some of it's just mind-numbing.

The premise is pretty ridiculous and ...

    Keeps getting better!

    Let's rock in the bath!

Light-hearted fun, lots of rocking out, shirts exploding off bodies, passionate souls - what's not to like!

The story isn't too deep, although the characters and styles are all unique. It's a fun adventure that brings you right along. The music, animation, and ridiculous situations that occur are well worth the watch.

    Is this weird or cool?
Its definitely a musical anime as it suggests. However the setting is rather confusing and makes little sense but at a certain point I stopped caring because the characters are silly and fun and the animation may be cg but it doesn't bring down the quality. The songs are also written by a real artist Tomoki Kikuya. The scenes are colorful and and intense.

Not sure what I just watched but I like it.
Bakumatsu Rock got my attention in the build up for this season just because it's an alternate history mash up. Wasn't sure what to expect going in but it definitely wasn't the Shinsengumi being a male pop idol group. Or that the rebellious faction spreading dissent against the government would be rock and roll. I mean, I really should have since guitars are prominent in the posters and rock is ...

  • What the what did I just paste my eyes on?
This...this thing. It's a show. I guess. It has characters from long-ago Japan playing rock music, so that's...unique. They show a lot of skin while playing, and it felt like a BL story. Not everything sucked, but I won't watch this one again. I mean I still not sure what I watched to start with. WTF?

  • This series is ridiculous
If you want to watch shirtless guys jamming, this is perfect for you. Lots of bromance.
This series is completely illogical, ridiculous, and is full of over-the-top display of passionate jrock guys trying to duke it out against jpop guys. Don't bother filling in plot holes, or think any of it makes any sense. It's just...absurd. Absurdly entertaining.
