Legendary basketball anime

Slam dunk is the tale of delinquent Hanamichi Sakuragi meeting the girl of his dreams and trying to win her heart by joining the school basketball team she loves. Not knowing her brother is the Captain of said team creates problems along with hating his team-mate Rukawa who is the object of his crush's desire despite Rukawara not knowing nor caring. Slam dunk is the tale of delinquent Hanamichi Sakuragi meeting the girl of his dreams and trying to win her heart by joining the school basketball team she loves. Not knowing her brother is the Captain of said team creates problems along with hating his team-mate Rukawa who is the object of his crush's desire despite Rukawara not knowing nor caring. At least that's how it starts, Sakuragi soon learns to love the game and through hard work and various encounters, he, along with the rest of the team grow into a formidable underdog team.

If you like basketball, you should watch this anime, it's by far the best basketball anime and I'd class it as one of the best anime of all time. I love watching Sakuragi grow as a player and the team develop in the face of the obstacles that get thrown in front of them. The tips given to him are all valid, pay enough attention to the right parts and it can improve your game too. Get the manga and you'll see that some key frames are lifted straight out of photo's from NBA professionals. The animation was fine for its time and still has some scenes where the attention to detail is superb on character's form and techniques. The rest of the team get across how much basketball means to them throughout the series and you'll want to play ball after watching it too.

Slam dunk is a beautifully balanced mixture of realism and sheer comic absurdity. The comical moments usually revolve around Sakuragi and his gang of former thugs who hang around as cheerleaders and part-time helpers. They can bring light to any situation and are even mid game you'll get comical moments from Rukara, "Gori" and Sakuragi that could have easily been horribly out place but instead just add to show.

Slam dunk long series but come the end, you'll want more but in a way be glad as topping the end would be tough. It even surpasses the original manga in the ending. Slam dunk is the yard stick all basketball anime are measured against and so far all have failed to reach it's legendary awesomeness.

Slam Dunk is a great introduction to the game of basketball. It teaches you basic concepts of the game while keeping you engaged with the very original characters. You'll be laughing your butt off and tearing up as you see your favorite ballers go through the trials of bball competition & high school life.

An Awesome Anime......

This is one of those gems of the old that I have slept on. It is almost 20 years old and this is by far one of the best sports anime I've ever watched. This is one of those gems of the old that I have slept on. It is almost 20 years old and this is by far one of the best sports anime I've ever watched. At first i thought I'd tackle a challenge: watch an entire anime series with around 100 episodes. There were many anime out there around this length that i just could not commit to. Before long, I became hooked. Having watched 10+ episodes a day, i finished within a week.

This anime not only entertains, but it contains factual information on the basics of basketball. The character designs were well crafted and realistic. The music selection is great and the art work for it's day was probably outstanding.

I, a girl, strongly suggest this anime to anyone who LOVES the sport of basketball and really just wants a laugh along with it all. I can honestly say I enjoyed this series and I'm glad I took the time to appreciate it. Sure it's outdated animation but still the true value of the anime is spectacular! Make sure you defiantly watch it.

Plot: Slam Dunk centers around Hanamichi Sakuragi, who starts as a delinquent outcast, becoming the leader of a gang. Hanamichi, being very unpopular with girls, has been rejected by them fifty times. Yet, he finds out that Haruko Akagi is the girl of his dreams, and is happy when she's not scared of him like all the other girls he has asked out.
Haruko Akagi, who recognizes Hanamichi's athleticism, introduces him to the Shohoku basketball team. Hanamichi was reluctant to join the team at first because he had no previous background in any sports and thought that basketball was a game for losers. Sakuragi, despite his immaturity and hot temper, proves to be a natural athlete with potential and joins the team in order to impress Haruko and prove that he is worthy of her. Later on, Sakuragi realizes that his love for the sport equals that of his crush on Haruko. Kaede Rukawa — Sakuragi's bitter rival (both on the basketball court and love, even when Rukawa doesn't acknowledge Haruko's crush on him), the star rookie and a "girl magnet" - joins the team at the same time. Hisashi Mitsui, an ex-junior high school MVP, and Ryota Miyagi, a short but fast player, both also rejoin the team and together these four struggle to complete team captain Takenori Akagi's dream of making Shohoku the national champion. Together, these misfits gain publicity and the once little known Shohoku basketball team becomes an all-star contender in Japan. ( From Wikipedia)

True sport anime classic

Strength
Despite its age, Slam Dunk's story-line surpasses most current sport anime. The story has enough twist and turn to keep you entertained. For a 101 episode, the anime has enough room to develop its characters into someone worth cheering for. You will watch Sakuragi progress into a more mature person over time.

The comedy can be laugh out loud at times. (This comes from someone who watches Gintama.) You will likely find Sakuragi's stupidity entertaining. After all, stupidity in this day and age seems to be on demand (e.g. YouTube videos). There is also hint of drama to contrast Slam Dunk's humorous side. These dramatic moments can be serious.

You don't have to like basketball to like Slam Dunk. (I never liked basket ball yet enjoyed Slam Dunk.) You don't have to know anything about basketball either because Slam Dunk approached basketball as if it's for people who don't know basketball rules. Or maybe, it is for people who don't know basket ball rules very well.

Weakness
Stories are timeless but animation gets old. Slam Dunk's animation is old. For a title that sold over 140 million manga copies in Japan alone (Top 4th selling manga of all time), it's ridiculous how the anime industry have not thought or remaking the anime series.

The anime starts to slow down at the mid way point yet still entertaining enough to continue. A warning: Slam Dunk anime was cancelled and wrapped up in episode 101. You have to continue and read the manga.

Who is it for?
If old animation is the least of your worries and finds story-line and character development far more interesting then jump right in—Slam Dunk would not disappoint you.

Simply put. I might not be the biggest anime fan ever, but I have been watching animes for over 20 years (I am 32 years old). Shounnen, Shoujo, I don`t have preferences as long as is engaging with a good plot. Shounnen, Shoujo, I don`t have preferences as long as is engaging with a good plot. Slam Dunk is my best series of all time, The characters are awesome, you have everything in one package, romance, comedy, fight, everything very well done and although the graphics looks a bit outdated, is the history that counts. The progression of the characters is perfect paced, they are not the best on what they do, they don`t become super heroes, they lose, they make mistakes (and lots of) They laugh and cry and makes you cry with them as well. When you watch the matches you are not a mere spectator, you are there with them. I am not a sports anime fan but do a favor for yourself, ignore the outdated graphics and watch one episode. You will fall in love and will be impossible to stop from there.

i just finished watching all 3 seasons. can't wait to find the movies and watch them. it really sucks it finished going to the nationals. i was really hoping to finish it thru the end of the national.
