From the teaser to the webpage before its release, we are led to believe this is a mecha war Anime, with references to every major series, including Macross, Gundam, and Shin Getter. From the teaser to the webpage before its release, we are led to believe this is a mecha war Anime, with references to every major series, including Macross, Gundam, and Shin Getter. What we get is exactly that... for the title sequence. The rest of the time, it's three robot girls trying to end the war in their own way... by searching for the secret of human laughter. A lot is left unexplained, as to why these three, who obviously have purpose elsewhere, are standing out in the middle of a battlefield, musing on laughter in the first place. Apparently they've discovered downtime?
The show itself is very formulaic. For the first half, they discuss a new way to create laughter. For the second half, they spend time in two rooms, one to simulate what would happen if they introduced a new element to the world, and one to look into human society. The simulation room uses the novel approach of re-enacting the title sequence, with the atmosphere changed. I found the first episode's gag to be actually amusing, but it was obvious that by the second episode they were trying too hard. The human database room is more interesting, because as robots with little to no knowledge of the human world, their impressions are spot on, yet completely misunderstood. The only thing I don't understand is why Kato isn't the one in charge of this room, as she's the library robot.
I won't fault the technical merits of this Anime. Using MikuMikuDance as a production medium is a real budget saver, and cooperating with those with their hands in Vocaloid, including KEI and Kohei, makes it all the more popular with those circles. The opening is actually using motion data from the MMD Super Robot Taisen video that won the MMDCUP 9 competition. For a free 3D animation program, and using custom models there's very little clipping in the animation of the three main characters. The voice acting is spot on, and in the human database room, they're actually allowed to giggle off the cuff.
A lot of english-speaking viewers won't be able to understand the genre here that makes this Anime funny. It essentially ridicules human life as a whole, from an objective point of view, something that's been done before from, say, aliens coming to Earth, but I don't know of any other show on American TV that actually dedicates an entire topic to it other than 3rd Rock From the Sun. I personally find it funny.
I do however have to fault the execution on this. Doing a bait and switch on your first ever Anime is a bad move, especially when switching genres between pure sci-fi action and comedy. The approach is so very formulaic that it has already started to get old. This isn't like Azumanga Daioh, where the formulaic 4Koma works. By the second episode, I was hoping that there would be a new room introduced to the second half. No such luck. Since they had introduced those features in the first episode, we didn't need any explanation to what the rooms were. It felt like less time was spent in each, so by the end of the episode, it felt like it was shorter than the first episode. It was definitely lacking something, and they won't be able to keep up these gags for a full 13 episodes. They'll need to start introducing new elements soon or this series will tank.
In the end, the technical merits are good, the provenance is good, but the execution needs work, and quickly.
