  • An essential classic. Nobody should skip this.
The worst thing someone could reasonably say about Rose of Versailles is that it is a pretty terrible lesson in French history. It is, however, a peerless lesson in shoujo history. Everything this show does has been copied by other works, some of them fantastic in their own right (Brother dear Brother and Revolutionary Girl Utena come to mind).

Just watch it. Pacing, character development, ...

  • Simply five stars!!!
Simply five stars! I don't want to spoil this great title. I so thankful that some culture and deep 70s style anime is on here. I was born in 1983 and elements of Vietnam were still running high well until say 1990 imo. So since this was made in 1979 I can feel the angst.

    An unforgettable classic!
I saw the first 20 episodes some ten years ago, and I remember wanting to see the rest so badly and having to wait months inbetween. When I revisisted the show after that hiatus, my enthusiasm for it hadn't dimmed, of anything it only grew stronger. The plotline and storytelling in Rose of Versailles is very strong and it's easy to get sucked in. Dazzling presentation all around, a diverse and ...

Nostalgic, a great example of why we watch anime in the first place.
The Rose of Versailles has everything, action, danger, romance, evolving characters, and genuine emotion. Oscar is readily likable and interesting as a lead. A beautiful rose surrounded by the corruption of the royal court. one thing I found fascinating is knowing how this story I.e. the story of the French revolution, ends and the fate of Marie Antoinette and Louis-Auguste. A history lesson and a ...

I feel in love with Oscar
I really like this show. I watched all the episodes and I could not stop watching. Wish there was more to this. I loved how the story line followed a historical event. When I would google the characters they would come up. It is a while to watch and I would recommend it to anyone.

If you want to be spellbound..
then please, watch this!! i'm usually really picky when it comes to anime, especially more current anime in general. rose of versailles is compelling, super dramatic and filled with fictional elements that mix in SO well with the history of the french revolution (in my opinion) seriously, everything from the aesthetic down to the story line is so fun to watch, and if you're a fan of adult ...

    Believe the hype! Oscar!
Rose of Versailles is an enduring classic for a reason. Oscar, the strong and beautiful heroine is character everyone can rally behind. The story is complex and heartbreaking and a must watch for shojo fans. The animation is old fashioned now but also so classic with the roses and sparkling tears!

    A True Classic and Masterpeice
To say that this show is a classic that defined the genre for years to come would be putting it mildly. So much of the anime we know today comes from this show, which is itself an absolute delight, with its fictionalized account of France right before (and during) the revolution.

Such an incredible and classic work.
I have never loved an anime as much as this one. I loved how this work includes real historic events and even how they dramatize them. Of course this is old shojo, but there is a huge emphasis on the details of all of the nobility's dresses, uniforms, and even the living spaces and manors. The music is also very beautiful and the opening theme is one of the best I've heard. It certainly gets stuck ...

I can't praise this one enough
I know this is an older show and the artwork shows it but please do not let that stop you from diving into this and enjoying it. While at times it is overly dramatic the story is one of rare quality even in the anime world. Check it out. If you have seen and enjoyed this check out "Brother, Dear Brother".
