My name is Kerensa. I am attending University with a major in English Literature and a minor in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language). I am in love with a wonderful man who I have been with for almost 5 years now. I am also partial in Japanese--woo! So far I have had a year and a half of the language and will be completing my full second within the coming semester. I also plan on attending a language college for the summer in Wisconsin to practice Japanese more intensely.
I have been to Japan once for two weeks and thoroughly enjoyed my experience. I would recommend Japan for anyone interested in a fun culture shock. たくさん勉強なった。ほんまに楽しかったやねん。 I attended a thousand year old fire festival in the rain in Nara (which was more fun than it sounded) and went to Tokyo. Though my heart, in Japan, will always be with Osaka (めっちゃ好きやねん).
I enjoy anime time to time. I use it more as a means to practice understanding casual Japanese though I am aware that the majority of people in Japan do not speak with high pitched cutsey voices. The majority of the Japanese believe that American's only come to Japan to witness anime. At a park I was approached by a woman who asked if I was a foreign exchange student. When I said I was only visiting she responded with, 「ああっ。やっぱり漫画が好きですね?」 (Ah, so I guess then you like manga?).
Don't go to Japan if you're obsessed with anime/manga. As in... don't make that your reason for going. I feel you will be strongly disappointed. Go if you have a love for the culture and language and love a total change from your every day Western life. It's a beautiful country and I can't wait to go back there and teach.
