thats one reason I'm not a huge fan of the ipods, they can be a bit overpriced. Creative came out with an mp3 plaver a few months ago called the Mosaic which is actually very cost effective. I'm not sure about the durability though. Sandisks are fairly cheap and very solid. My buddy has one that went through the wash, got dumped in a lake, has fallen countless times and cracked the screen, but it still works like new (even with the cracked screen).
If you insist on an ipod, the last shuffle was cheap and solid, I don't know too much about the new one though.
