report:
NG Kids: Hi Michaela! How are things at the Borneo Orang-utan Survival Foundation (BOSF)?
Michaela Strachan: The rescue centre is fuller than ever. Fortunately they’ve had a bit of money so they can build new cages but it’s really sad that so many orang-utans keep coming in.
NGK: What’s the biggest threat to orang-utans?
MS: It used to be logging and deforestation. Then forests were being cut down to supply palm oil for supermarket products. But now, on top of that, palm oil is wanted for bio fuel. So there’s more pressure than ever on the forest where orang-utans live.
NGK: What was it like being back at the BOSF centre?
MS: It was really wonderful to see the orang-utans. They’re all so cute and are interested in everything! Our cameraman was filming with an orang-utan sitting on his head at one point!
NGK: What other funny stuff happened when you were filming this series?
MS: I was shooting a link to camera, and I noticed an orang-utan up a tree nearby reading a book! Then one dropped down, covered in makeup! They’d found my backpack and decided to play with all my stuff!
NGK: Why is the work that BOSF does so important?
MS: There aren’t many rescue centres in Indonesia, so they’re all really important. They help orphaned and stranded orang-utans, and are also working with the government to protect the forest and find areas to release orang-utans back into the wild.
NGK: How can our readers help?
MS: The best way is to support charities and sponsor orang-utans. It’s a great way to help and you get updates and emails! There is hope for orang-utans – there’s enough forest left to be able to save them, but it has to be protected, and that takes money.
