Try the Academic Super Store they hade Lightwave for 200 when i got mine. just Google it.

Its not Auto Desk, Newtek is its own company. I have used Autocad...alot when I was in highschool still.

The program that I use is lightwave 3d by Newtek. I have used terragen(PlanetSide) for some but I tend to augment those in lightwave for better lighting.

It depends often times I just draw the sketch and use it as a reference. Its similar to modeling 3d surfaces in say autocad. I'm almost done with texturing on that one so look for a finished product in a week or 2.
