He doesn't know it before, but then after he discover a secret room in their house and found a lots of stuffs and saw a clothes, he wear it and try to defeat Kaitou Kid. He met Kid and challenge him, he won. Then he discover that he's father is the real kid and his assistant is just pretending to be kid. Then after that, he become the 2nd kaitou kid. No one knows that he's Kaitou Kid not even Aoko (his childhood friend later becomes his girlfriend).
