  • Ok... But not fabulous...
So this anime uses a magical girl basis with some science, kind of... But unlike other shows, Vividred Operation feels plain. The characters are typical and their fights always end successfully. I can't feel very much action and suspense from this anime... All in all, it's "acceptable".

    Description Needs Fixing
Reading the description made it sound like this would be an interesting sci-fi about science solving all the world's problems and then said science screwing the world over only to be saved by more science. Yay science. But no. Instead it's about science powered magical girls that transform using the power of love and friendship and happiness and sunshine and bleeeegh I'm puking rainbows in the ...

It's okay for what it is...
...That is to say - decidedly not what it was advertised as. Anyone expecting a sci-fi saga (hopefully) a bit less complex than Noein is going to be sorely disappointed.
The first three episodes demonstrate this to be pretty much a typical magical girl show, albeit with a sci-fi aesthetic. Every remotely sci-fi topic gets handwaved away at best, and at worst we'll get stuck with something about ...

It's amazing how much money the Japanese Self Defense Force have...
Anime tropes and cliches have been around as long as, well, anime. These have set the base standard of anime and, like it or not, we have no one else but ourselves to blame for making cliches and tropes. So who would have thought that someone in A-1 Pictures would suddenly have the idea to create something which he thinks everyone would enjoy in the form of a group of girls, all colour-coded, ...

    Light-hearted and enjoyable
Yes, the fanservice is abundant; yes, it's very clearly by the same guy who directed Strike Witches, and he's not shy about it at all. But if you look past the gratuitous supply of butt shots, Vividred Operation is a fun little series - I consider it "the antidote to Puella Magi Madoka Magica," with influence not only from Strike Witches, but Lyrical Nanoha as well.

It may not be your cup of ...

    For a charnel-dungeon fitter:
Mysterious aliens are laying siege to Japan and only a group of young girls with access to powerful forces can stop them. It's a tired setup but manages to be entertaining on occasion. The central conceit that the girls have to kiss and merge to activate their powers and this is played to the hilt with no shame and good wry lines. Unfortunately this light-touch is sabotaged by the serious plot ...
