First and last episodes feel flat. Watch this for the middle!
Like my review title says, the first episode feels very flat. Although depth starts creeping in towards the end of the first episode. And the last episode also felt like a copy of some other lower budget anime with C list writers.

But the middle episodes have real plot and character depth in them. Even when the characters act in a stereotyped manner, it still manages to feel like they're ...

    Lacks Depth and Interest
Seems too similar to a few other space-school like animes that have come out the past 2 or 3 years. Not only that, the characters lack any real depth, the flow of the story is slow and story itself seems flat.

This was just a big "nope" for me. Would not recommend at all.

  • So bad it needs a Plinkett Review.
The world building is nonexistent. The characters are flat, uninteresting, and been done to death a thousand times, and much better in other anime. The writing is pedestrian levels of cringe and uninspired. I won't knock a novice that's trying their best. But mimicking every troupe you've seen and only able to write action scenes where the protagonist uses his white knight powers to save the ...

  • NGNL Except the magic makes sense
The MC is honestly a badass and it gets to the point where you don't even wonder if he will win, but how. Similar feeling to the one that shows like NGNL or Code Geass give you.

Although the first episode makes it seem like its gonna turn into a harem shitshow, the show itself seems more like an inversion on that trope, if anything.

Just give it a chance and you'll probably enjoy it.

    An anime of extremes
And by extremes, I mean hugely varying enjoyability and quality in... basically everything.

You have the base setup of "seemingly lazy genius teacher in a school of magic", which, while not the most original concept ever, seems interesting enough nonetheless to get one's hopes up. Then you look at the outfits the girls are supposed to wear, which are simply awful even by fanservice standards, ...

  • A Wonderful Anti-Hero Emerges
The first episode took a risk. However, this risk pays off when you come to love the main character who seemed too cocky to survive. His avant-garde techniques are honestly refreshing to see, and I wish I had teachers/professors like that in my classes. My one issue in this show is the fetishwear that passes for female school uniforms.

  • Starts out strong but...
I've stopped watching after ep. 9... The show starts off strong and doesn't disappoint in the first few episodes. It quickly started to drop off being entertaining and I cannot bring myself to continue to episode 10. Trying to keep it spoiler free, so i won't say more than "I didn't care about 75% of the characters".

    Started great but ended good
If I could rate 4.5 stars I probably would have done that. I found the "bastard" part of the show title to be a little misleading. While, Glenn, the main character and "bastard magic instructor" certainly starts out as an ass of a guy, he does an extremely fast turn around. Originally he doesn't have a single care in the world to be teaching at school, but then after ONE conversation from an ...

  • Magic, cute girls, friendship
If you like powerful lead characters with a mysterious past that chick are gonna like and some supporting characters that range from helpful to useless, then you'll like Akashic Records of the Bastard Instructor. All in all not a bad anime, but it really doesnt bring anything new to the genre. Cool fight sequences and some nice animation help. I would barely give this a recommendation
