First arrest case for uploading movies in Japan
On May 23, the cyber crime unit of the Metropolitan Police Department arrested a 35-year-old unemployed man from Kochi Prefecture, on the island of Shikoku, on suspicion of uploading the two Hollywood movies, Salt and Night & Day, to Nico Nico Douga without the copyholders' permission. Nico Nico Douga is the most popular video sharing website in Japan. The man has admitted his guilt.
According to the reports, the man had illegally uploaded about 40 movies he rented or downloaded to Nico Nico Douga since spring 2009. The administrator of Nico Nico Douga, following the request from the Japan and International Motion Picture Copyright Association, Inc. (JIMCA), sent him a warning to stop uploading illegal contents, but he ignored it and kept posting movies repeatedly. Finally, the Metropolitan Police Department had no choice but to arrest him. There has been an arrest case for pirated music in the past, but this is the first arrest case for uploading movies to Japanese video sharing website in Japan. The man said, "I wanted to watch movies sharing the comments with other people, rather than watching it alone."
As of today, I can still find many illegal contents in Nico Nico Douga, including anime and its related contents. Considering the recent harsh activities by the Japanese police enforcement against copyright infringement crime, most people may think it is too risky to upload illegal contents to popular video sharing sites any more.
