VIDEO: "Monster Roll" Short Pits Sushi Chefs Against Sea Monsters

Short film offers a look at a different kind of kaiju battle

It was inevitable. The sea creatures we've treated as a quick meal for so long are finally fighting back, and there's only one force suited to stopping them. Writer-director Dan Blank knows this is a job for sushi chefs, and he's pitting them against monsters of the deep in his short film Monster Roll

Monster Roll was created as a proof-of-concept for a feature, so Blank and his crew are most definitely gunning for something bigger here. See if what they've done below has you hungry for more.

An excerpt from Blank's description:

We sorely miss the tone of those big, fun fantasy movies we grew up with-movies like Ghostbusters, Gremlins, and Big Trouble in Little China.  We also want to continue the tradition of more recent movies like The Host and District 9 where strong story, characters, and humor take priority over expensive VFX sequences.

If you like MONSTER ROLL and want to help it get to the next stage, please share the film with friends.  Just by spreading the word, you can help prove that we're not totally crazy in thinking this is a movie a bunch of us want to see.

There are plenty of cool behind the scenes things to check out at the film's website. A making of clip offers a before and after VFX breakdown:

Anyone see promise for a feature film on the horizon?
