NES-Style Platformer "Shovel Knight" Announced for Wii U and 3DS

Yacht Club Games' Kickstarter is getting closer to its donation goal

The folks at developer Yacht Club Games—which includes people from WayForward (Mighty Switch Force, Shantae)—are cooking up what looks to be one of the most delightful modern NES-style games to date. Shovel Knight is a platformer that mixes the style of Mega Man, Castlevania, Ducktales and more to form its own potent brew, and the Kickstarter created to fund it is getting closer and closer to its donation goal.

While Shovel Knight was already planned for PC, even better news was recently added to the Kickstarter page: It's also coming to Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

Pretty much everything about Shovel Knight looks spot-on, from the graphics to the music by WayForward's go-to composer Jake "virt" Kaufman (Contra 4, Double Dragon Neon). Check out the video below for a taste of what to expect from the final product.

We don't always cover Kickstarter stuff. It has to be something special for me to even think about it, but a project like Shovel Knight is far more interesting personally than, say, a major film studio trying to line their coffers with donations from a hungry, established fan base. And hey, there are still slots open for the EXTREME donation that nets you a yacht party with Yacht Club Games! I wonder if anyone will do that… imagine if just one person did. What an awkward party.

If you're heading to PAX East this weekend you'll be able to check out Shovel Knight in person.
